MechAssault is a fun game with some really explosive environments.

You have two options of play, a single player mode and multiplayer. Campaign mode is a story mode where you fight enemy forces and complete mission goals which and different and fun. There are three different types of mechs large, medium, and small. Each have different attributes and weapons. There is a large variety of unlock able mechs that are very powerful and unique. They all handle differently and play very well. The computer’s AI is good but some of the smaller enemy’s that aren’t mechs will occasionally get stuck of a wall or have a dumb reaction to the fight at hand, but for the most part the mechs in particular all fight well and present a challenge to defeat them.

The number one feature of the environments and levels you play is that there is a ton of interactive environments in the game. You shot a rocket into tree they will catch on fire and burn. You can destroy buildings, large rocks, and many other parts of the surrounding battlefields. There are a lot of nice touches to the game especially in the snow when your mech is covered in ice and snow. The only negatives are that sometimes some animations could be better like when the trees burn down and go away, and there is very rarely a little slowdown when there is a ton of things going on in the screen which is very infrequently.

Sound effects are awesome in this game with great Dolby Digital support. If you have a home theater or surround sound system at you house, crank up the subwoofer and prepare to fell each explosion and step a huge mech makes. There is also some nice background music that fits well and doesn’t get old quickly. The voice work in the single player campaign is decent and there really isn’t anything to complain about with the games sound.

With a relatively short single player campaign and multiplayer with online mode you can get some time out of this game but I don’t think it has the life to be played forever on multiplayer. It’s fun but I don’t see anyone playing day after day in multiplayer. But for someone who can’t get enough you never know. Overall this is a fun game and is worth checking out if you’re a mech fan or even if you not. I am not a huge mech guy but I thought the idea of blowing up buildings might be fun and it is so even if your relatively interested I’d at least give it a rental. As usual it’s an overrated Jeff Worstmann gamespot review where he just clicks nine for everything, but it’s not as bad of an exaggeration as he customarily scores a game.
