Ok but frustrating game

User Rating: 7 | Metro Exodus PC

So I picked up the new enhanced edition which has very high system requirements. I have never played a previous metro game before and I was expecting something really graphically special but I wouldn't say this looks better than any other current game out there. Yes there are nice touches and it has raytracing etc but maybe all the drab grey sky / snow scenery detracts from the graphics engine's capablities.

The game evolves around Artyom in a first person shooter rpg where he has been living undergound for 20 years with fellow survivors of a nuclear war. He likes to venture outside to see if any other survivors can be found but discovers there has been a massive hoax by the Russian government to try and trick the rest of the world that no one survived the blast. So Artyom goes on a hunt to track down the government officials who have lied.

The story is quite weak, side quests that you find along the way don't make any sense its like they are just put there as time fillers. There are translation issues into English when NPC's speak that again make scant sense.

As for gameplay, loading up the game takes about 4 minutes which is the longest gameload time I've ever experienced, as I say above this is a hardly cutting edge game. Also there are very long cutscreen speeches which really slow the game down and are quite boring (coupled with the bad translation). The game is not very intuitive and whilst you have a rudimentary map which shows a quest marker, there is no journal or minimap. Often you arrive at the location and dont know what to do - its one of those games where you have to look up walkthrough videos every half hour on youtube to find out where to go or what to do.

It is marketed as an open world game but it really isnt. The initial levels are very narrow and scripted but about 2 hours into the game you get out into the "open world" only to find that Artyom cannot swim! Therefore everything is really an invisible corridor to the quest location which is often located on an island so Artyom has to find a boat to get across

Eniemies are often zombies/mutants who have survived the nuclear war. It can often be difficult because weapons which you upgrade/modify at crafting stations are rubbish and there is a scant amount of ammo about so you often find yourseld having to melee attack hoardes of mobs often resulting in your death

Also Artyom does not speak which seems really weird when npcs are talking to him and he does not reply.

I believed the makers of Metro series to be a AAA studio but this really does feel like an unpolished indie game

Overall it's a good game but really a bargain bin title. I understand the game is about 25 hours long. I am not sure if I will make it to the end

I play in 4k ultra settings and get 115fps
