Who would have thought that Mario had to really fight for the title of platforming king? Rayman Origins was amazing, and the upcoming Rayman Legends looks outstanding as well, but either way, Rayman will never become as famour as Mario, no video game character will ever be as famous as Mario. Everybody knows Super Mario, I love the games, unfortunately the recent "New Super Mario Bros 2" failed to impress me, it felt kind of stale, it was fun enough, but I had hoped for more. This is a much better Mario game in my opinion. It's longer for one thing, it has better levels, some really creative ones too, the bosses are tougher and some are great to battle with, like Ludwig, the bosses have more tricks up their sleeve than ever before. This is 2D Mario as you know and love it, up to 5 players can play the game co-op or competitively, 4 players can play as characters while a fifth player can use the gamepad to create blocks to help or hinder the other players or manipulate the gameworld in other ways. You can use the wii remotes if you have some lying around, I chose to use a wii remote rather than the gamepad, sorry, I'm not a big fan of the gamepad, I'd rather use a pro controller or even the wii remote sideways as a controller, I'm speaking in general, because you can't use the pro controller with this game, at least I don't think so unless there's some update that allows it. The gamepad works fine though, used it for some off-TV play, but given the choice, I'll stick to the other option. The levels are bright and colourful, the graphics aren't as striking as you might have hoped for, save for some near the end, the final boss fight is pretty epic as far as I'm concerned, and I was impressed.
The game is challenging in true Mario fashion, good luck trying to get all those star coins. The squirrel suit is great and all, there's not many new things about this game, but that isn't necessarily a major issue when they do it this well. It's great fun, challenging and entertaining with friends, or infuriating in certain levels, you're bound to get into each others way. But definitely check it out, if you have a Wii U I'm assuming you have checked it out already, there's not many exclusive games worth playing on this system, or even games that are preferrable to play on the Wii U as opposed to some other system, hope the Wii U will have more games soon, btw, I'm watching the pretty bad YouTube app on the Wii U, watching Michael Pachter say the Wii U is a crappy product, well, I actually like Pachter, and regardless, the Wii U has games like this one and other exclusives that in my estimation makes it a system worth buying if you like Nintendo games. New Super Mario Bros. U is a great Mario game, excellent fun, alone or in co-op, I'm still waiting for the new 3D Mario game, those seem to push further and innovate as opposed to playing it safe like this, but hey, you crave some fun 2D Mario action, this is a great title. Wahooo!
