1999's Best-Selling Games

The numbers are in. PC Data has compiled a list of the 20 best-selling games of last year.

Although Disney Interactive's Who Wants to be a Millionaire has been selling like hot cakes during the last couple of months, sales weren't quite high enough to make 1999's best-seller list. That honor goes to Hasbro Interactive and MicroProse's Roller Coaster Tycoon, according to PC Data's figures for all of 1999. Maxis' SimCity 3000 from Electronic Arts was the second best-selling game of the year, while the increasingly popular Millionaire took third, despite only going on sale in late November '99.

Age of Empires II from Microsoft took fourth, while a couple of 1998 favorites, Blizzard's Starcraft and Valve's Half-Life, were the fifth and sixth top sellers in 1999, respectively. The rest of 1999's top 20 isn't surprising, and the list lincludes such popular and hyped games like Tiberian Sun, Baldur's Gate, Rainbow Six Gold, Rogue Spear, Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, and a slew of others.

Also of interest is a separate PC Data report, also filed today. In it, PC Data names the top 30 software publishers of 1999 based on revenues earned, and over a third of the companies listed were game publishers. In fact, Mattel Interactive and Havas Interactive placed in second and third, respectively. Other publishers included giants like Electronic Arts, Activision, Eidos, and GT Interactive, as well as some smaller ones like Tom Clancy's Red Storm Entertainment.
