Shortly after Sony released the PlayStation 3, it offered gamers a selection of downloadable games from the original PlayStation, including Crash Bandicoot, Tekken 2, and Syphon Filter. However, the games were playable only on the PlayStation Portable.

Now retro gamers who'd like to play those games on a bigger screen are getting the chance, as Sony today updated 10 of the downloadable PlayStation offerings to be playable on the PS3 as well. The updated downloads were made possible by a PS3 firmware patch last month. Customers who already purchased one of the games for play on the PSP can download a new license for the game for free that will allow it to be played on the PS3 as well.

The 10 games currently compatible with both the PSP and the PS3 are 2Xtreme, Crash Bandicoot, Destruction Derby, Jet Moto, Jumping Flash, MediEvil, Rally Cross, Syphon Filter, Tekken 2, and WipeOut. GameSpot downloaded Crash Bandicoot to find that the game displayed at a resolution of 480p and a 4:3 screen ratio.

A pair of downloadable games on the service, Cool Boarders and Hot Shots Golf 2, remain unplayable on the PS3.

Being able to play with a Sixaxis on a big screen isn't the only added perk of these downloads; Sony also restored the multiplayer modes to Rally Cross, Jet Moto, Tekken 2, and 2Xtreme. All of those games were single-player experiences on the PSP, because the games were not altered to support the system's wireless multiplayer capabilities.

Each game is $5.99, which covers the license to download and play the game on the PSP as well as the PS3.
