PS4 doesn't require PlayStation Plus for Share feature

The PlayStation 4's Share functionality, which allows users to capture and share gameplay screenshots and videos, will not require a PlayStation Plus subscription.

Microsoft confirmed yesterday that the Xbox One's similar Game DVR functionality is restricted to Xbox Live Gold members.

Though PS4 gamers won't need to have a PS Plus subscription to share screenshots and videos, the "Share" functionality will be limited. Yoshida said in May that may be restrictions placed on the footage gamers wish to upload using the service.

"There will be parts of a game that the maker does not want people to be able to see. For example, on Vita, developers can in certain scenes disable the feature that lets users take a screenshot, and (the Share function) will have a similar mechanism. The creator may not want to make video of the final boss sharable, for instance," he said at the time.

In addition, a PS Plus subscription ($50/year) will be required to play PS4 games online. Currently, PlayStation 3 gamers can play online for free. Yoshida explained in June that the requirement is a response to the additional investment Sony has had to make on the network side.

The PS4 launches worldwide this holiday for $399/€399/£349.
