A great step forward for the genre

I haven't posted a review on gamespot since 2008 that alone should tell you how good the game is, I just finished the game today and since neither the epic game store nor Ubisoft's launcher have review functions I popped back here instead. This legitimately one of the best metroidvanias I have ever played, the world is colorful and jam packed with secrets to discover. It scratches that collect-a-thon itch that I've had since N64 platformers. The combat is fluid and gets more interesting with each new ability you unlock. The map features might be one of the best ones I've seen in a metroidvania and I only hope that future games in the genre take inspiration from this game. It does the standard stuff of showing you areas you've explored, but you also have the options to leave tokens on the map for certain harder collectibles you don't feel like tackling right away, but by far the best feature is the ability to take screencaps of puzzles you don't yet have the ability for yet, those stay on the map, and make backtracking a lot easier as you can plan your path seamlessly. The side quests are fun and expand the lore of the game, the characters are all interesting and the boss fights are just the right amount of challenging. The distribution of save points is also well paced, so dying never feels too punishing. I absolutely loved my time with this game. I had a passing interest in the franchise before but if future games in the series go in similar direction I will be tagging along
