Surprisingly good. Glad they still update an Ps2 game.

I'll just get straight to the point. This is still the most enjoyable version of PES available. After buying the Ps3 version and becoming frustrated by how poor it was this year, i sold it and bought the Ps2 version when it came out. I'm not one who will play a game purely because it looks better or is on the newest console. I play the games i enjoy the most what i consider to be the best. First of, the gameplay is still somehwhat that of PES 6. It's slightly harder to score from distance, but that is more realistic anyway. The players movement, dribbling, passing and shooting all still look more realistic and convincing than that of the next gen versions. This is one thing that bugs me. How hard can it be to implement the qualities that the Ps2 version has into a next gen version with the looks to match? Apparently it's impossible. Anyway, the Ps2 version still has all the up to date modes on offer that the Ps3/360/Pc versions do: Master League, Champions League, Become a Legend, Copa Santandores and it also has World Player mode, something if im correct in saying, is NOT on the next gen version from what i remember. I may be wrong but i do not remember seeing it on the Ps3 version. As for the World Player, it is similar to Become a Legend, except you can pick any player at any team, and play through a season as them instead. Your club is given targets at the start of the season and you have to try and meet them. Become a legend is still similar to last years, and retains it's slight superiority in some ways over the next gen version, mainly because you can edit form, weak foot acc and weak foot freq when you make your player, and you can choose what growth curve you want [early peak, early-lasting, late peak, etc] aswell as choosing 3 positions to begin with, giving you more versatility from the start.

Onto the main part of the game really, Master League. You will notice now, that the game is no longer in PES credits, it is in £! Yes, your players now have reall values in pounds [or euros if you prefer]! It also has some features from the next gen versions now, like club sponsors and your fan membership, and coaches and scouts. This gives Master League somewhat of a boost, something the Ps2 version has long needed. Also growth curves of some players have at last altered on the game. No longer does Bendnter become the awesome marksman he will never be in real life! This is good, as it means you won't automatically go for the same players as you did last year and the year before etc, meaning you have to look for other talent for a change.

The edit mode is still top notch and when your moving a player from one club to another, thankfully the clubs name is back on the screen so you don't have to guess by the clubs symbol! The PES shop is still there with the same kinda stuff as always to unlock, but at least it gives you extra reasons to play. One flaw i should add though is that you can't edit or transfer any players from the Copa Santandor teams, and you can't use these teams in anything other than the Copa Santandor friendlies/league. It's slightly annoying but nothin major as i'm not a fan of the brazilian league anyway, though it is nice to see Ronaldo and Roberto Carlos on the game. ^^

Other things worth mentioning are the commentary is improve as Jim Beglin is on board and replaces Mark Lawrenson, and although a large chunk of the commentary is recycled from previous years, there is a fair chunk of new stuff too. Graphically, we know the game has peaked on Ps2, but they have still updates some faces, and some do look better and more realistic than ever, for a Ps2 game anyway. The only other thing i should add is that this does not run on the 60gb Ps3, so you can't play it with the upscaled visuals which is a little shame. The only other gripe i make is why does it not have widescreen mode? Everyone has widescreen TVs now near enough. I refuse to play it stretched so there i am with big black borders down the side of my TV. Oh well...you can't have it all i guess.

Anyway, all in all, it's the best football on the Ps2, and superior to the next gen versions of PES aswell in my opinion. Well worth the money.
