Destruction! Who wouldn't want to see that?

User Rating: 7 | Red Faction: Guerrilla X360
Open-world games normally give you the freedom to do a selection of lots of things to do on a large scale. Red Faction: Guerrilla may be the best game in the series, but it doesn't exactly fit into the genre as well as others. Still, it's definitely advisable that you play this thanks to it's fun destruction engine and interesting shooting mechanics.

The story is basic but understandable. You play as Alec Mason who is part of the Red Faction attending Mars. After the assassination of his brother, Mason must seek revenging by taking over Mars from the EDF with the help of the Red Faction. As far as the graphics is concerned, most of the game looks very nice. Every now and then, you will get animation glitches that often occur but it's nothing too distracting. On top of that, I did find a few significant problems with the presentation. For example, the music is basic and it doesn't keep you engaged with your experience on Mars. Also, the tutorials that give you information on the EDF and the different missions confused me and showed to me that it was rather unorganised.

The gameplay is also basic but interesting and rather fun. Mars is split into different sections controlled by the EDF. Your job is to complete the missions that are given to you and take over all 6 of the sections. In order to do that, you are given a sledgehammer to take things down and collect scrap to use in the upgrades to upgrade and buy new weapons. Watching the constructions get destroyed is an absolute pleasure, although when starting off, it is going to take a frustratingly long time to take down the bigger constructions. So get upgrading. What I do like though is that destroying things is a lot of fun. The shooting is also interesting. There's a cover system which works well and lets you get that extra advantage against big numbers of enemies.
I haven't completed it yet, but the first area took me around 1-2 hours to take over. So I'm expecting 8-10 hours of total gameplay.

In conclusion, Red Faction: Guerrilla tries to show off how unique and enjoyable it is in its destruction and succeeds. The unorganised menus and the frustrating destruction lengths can set your teeth on edge, but it's still a good game.
