About GameSpot Reviews

GameSpot may receive revenue from affiliate and advertising partnerships for sharing this content and from purchases through links.

Remember to read the text, not just the score!

GameSpot reviews come in all shapes and sizes. There are the standard game reviews you're used to seeing; there are reviews in progress; there are updated reviews of ongoing games; and now, there are scored reviews of other kinds of entertainment, like movies and TV.

All that sounds complicated, but it's really quite simple. While our approach to reviews can and will grow and change over time, the purpose of any GameSpot review remains the same: to provide a well-argued, honest, and thorough opinion about a game, movie, or TV show. But what's an "updated" review, exactly? And what do those numbers mean? This guide is here to help.

GameSpot Review Scale

Reviews don't boil down to just "I like it" or "I don't like it." GameSpot reviewers--which includes editors, video producers, and talented freelancers who fill in the gaps--are dedicated to thoughtful, robust criticism that takes a number of factors into account. The score is a point of reference, but if you want to really understand whether a game (or movie or TV show) is for you or not, you'll find what you need in the content of the review itself.

GameSpot uses a 10-point review scale with no increments--so there are no .5s. Here's a quick breakdown of what our scores represent:

10 - Essential

9 - Superb

8 - Great

7 - Good

6 - Fair

5 - Mediocre

4 - Poor

3 - Bad

2 - Terrible

1 - Abysmal

Reviews In Progress and Early Review Impressions

If you've been on GameSpot in the last few years, you've likely seen a review in progress or two before. Game reviews are published "in progress" if we've played a significant amount of the game but haven't been able to see some aspect of it fully--in many cases, it's the online component, which we of course can't experience properly until after the game has officially released. This way, you can get a good idea of what the game is like and what we think of it around the time of launch, keeping in mind that a few aspects might still be question marks.

You'll know it's a review in progress because of the headline, but just in case you miss that, the score is also blue instead of orange. We also make sure to include in the text of the review what we still have left to do before we can finalize the review--and keep in mind that details, including the score, are subject to change before we flip the switch.

In rare cases, we won't have access to a game until right before or even at launch. In these situations (which mostly consist of online-only games), we may publish "early review impressions" based on our first day or so with the game. These early impressions are unscored and a little less formal, and you'll know exactly what we've done and what we still have to do before we're comfortable moving on to the review in progress or even the final review.

Updated Reviews

We've been saying a lot about "finalizing" reviews, but in reality, a lot of games are not final at launch or even two weeks after launch, once servers are stable and bugs are patched out. More and more games change over months and even years, and so while a final GameSpot review is mostly final, there are some cases where we will want to revisit a game down the line and then write a new, updated review to reflect the times.

In these cases, a game will have to have changed significantly from the version we critiqued in our original review. But not every game that has changed gets this treatment--there are only so many hours in a day and so many GameSpot reviewers, so the decision to write a new review of a game comes down to the interests of both our staff and our readers. We use our best judgment based on our own experiences with a game and what people in general are playing, plus what needs fresh criticism as opposed to news about live events and updates.

Finally, an updated review is not a chance to "undo" a previous score or opinion. The original review still lives on GameSpot, and you'll be able to read both to get a picture of where the game was and what it is now.

If you have any questions about reviews on GameSpot, feel free to contact managing editor Tamoor Hussain.

Reviews used to have 0.1 differences, then it became 0.5 and now it's 1.0 differences. Next up there will either be a red or green colored stain to signify "good" vs. "bad" as part of Gamespot's new troglodyte friendly marketing.

This article is abysmal 1 out of 10, jk. You know what? I actually like the 20 point rating scale (scoring games with 0.5 increments). Video games don't need a 100 point scale; when reviewers give a game a 9.8 out of 10, or a 9.9 out of 10, they might as well give the game a 9.81341341241926126 out of 10. I may not agree with most of GameSpot's recent reviews, but I still respect their scoring system.

The writer seems to think that most of the disagreement with the score of a game comes from a "deterioration" over time of the game...

IMO that's not the problem. The problem arises when a review score is suspiciously high or low. As it was with Rome 2: TW, for example.

I preferred the tenth scale used before so ratings would go 9.0, 9.1, 9.2, 9.3 etc. instead of the .5 increments now. So a game is either 9.0 or 9.5 or 10.0 which is stupid IMO.

Rating GTA IV and MGS 10/10 a few years ago was just bs.

Reviews should not be just "opinions" of GS editors but should reflect what a gamer would give it. You have to put yourself in an average gamers shoe as well to review it while removing any ridiculous personal bias you may have (e.g. misogynistic for GTA V. It is a GTA game for crying out loud. Maybe the reviewer never played a GTA before so didn't know).

Still, the GS scores are wildly off the mark when compared to Metacritic. It is not in the same ballpark for many games which means GS is not trustworthy for reviews anymore. The std deviation is too much.

Edit: another thing I liked from before was the scoring system which gave a score breakdown like Sound, Gameplay, Graphics, Value, Tilt etc. This clearly showed where the game excelled. That is all gone now.

I think what would be better is if scores were dropped entirely, and they just have a list of pros and cons, that way there is no "OMG SHULD BE A TENN!!!!!!!!!11ONE!!" and people can either agree/disagree with the points given. Even I've gotten weary of certain reviews, I think chucking the number system entirely is definitely the best way forward. That way the reviews read more like articles with balanced pros and cons, rather than adding a mostly superficial number to the end of it and causing fanboy hate..

@megafitch: That is what I use to love about CGR Undertow. Their reviews had no number scores to them. I think that's best. Just tell me about the game and list out the pros and cons.

@megafitch Agreed, people shouldn't go into a game thinking it's going to be bad or good based souly on a number.

" Instead, as games come out that raise the bar, we adjust our expectations accordingly. A game that earns a high score today is probably better than a game that earned the same score on our scale several years ago."

I think lots of people need to read and understand this part.

@Dudersaper "probably" as in "might be", but not likely. One would assume that a person reading scores/reviews would compare the respective opinions with titles at a similar time.

Still whining over .5s? Hey, why not adopt a system based on scientific notation? Then we can get reeeeeaaal specific.

Read the reviews. The descriptions are more important than the numbers anyway. And the 10 point system as described seems more realistic than most. Top-weighting the numbers has the same effect as getting rid of the precious decimals anyway. Why should a 7 be mediocre? That's what a 5 is for.

I have to say that people dont understand the numbers at all. They dont understand that 7 is good game... It is playable game. They go spit profanities here when they get lower score than 8 or 9 of the game they like.

It's like the critic cant review things without people blaming their reviews. I think internet has given us whole lot of problems to people who try to do their job and people seems to not understand this. I am happy that I can read the reviews and see people who play games as job give us some idea what the game gives. I think review people are humas and have their likes and dislikes. If people dont like one persons reviews they should not read them and not come and complain about how the person suck and is idiot.

I love that you give us content and keep it up. I am avid reader and listener and watcher... Hope we get somewhat more podcasts please.

@liffi Exactly poeple don't realize that a 7 isn't a bad score. They go as far as to complain about 8's and sometimes even 9's...... even some of the stuff I love I wouldn't personally rate 10 because that's not how rating works. Everybody expects a perfect score when they like a game though.

@uglypinkmoose @liffi I hate it when they blame the person how he or she is bad person for giving a bad review. Seems like too many people take it that the reviewer say bad things about them as a person. I like to read reviews by x person usually cause he or she has similar taste as me so I get the feeling should I buy a game or not. Sometimes I just want to see what some one likes or dislikes about the game and do I feel the same. I tend to buy some games even if they arent the best just cause I like them and I like to play games. My games dont have to be best and even some of the best games I dislike myself... The number doesnt make me like or hate any game more or less. Sure if I am in between buying or not buying a game it can put the last nail in the coffin.

I think reviews are important thing that we need sometimes and most of the times they give us plenty of good content and info about games that we most likely love to play.

I'm not against the multiple reviews, but I'm really against the new scoring system, 10-points system is just not enough, the recent one was better, and the 100-points system which a lot of gaming sites now use is even much much better.

@AC-FAN-I-AM but with a 100 point system what would be the difference between 90 and 91 but with the 10 point system there is a clear difference between the numbers and i think that the 10 point system is easier to understand but to each his own

maybe they could allow users to chose which scoring system they see on reviews, but that could be complicated

@MajinSquall

To me, when it comes to the score, the difference between a 90 and 91 isn't necessarily what matters, it's what the numbers of the individual aspects get, if they went that route again, because a game that gets 91 could have slightly better gameplay than the 90, while everything else is basically just as great. Say I take five aspects of a game, I give one aspect a 9.0, another a 9.0, another a 9.0, and another a 9.0, but the last aspect, the fifth one I give it a 9.5, while the other game had 9.0's across the board, that's the difference.

Ever since they got rid of Jeff Gerstman over the Kane and Lynch saga years ago, Gamespot has a history of shady reviews. Gamers don't trust them because they think there are ulterior motives behind the scores.

@happycamper00 i don't necessarily agree with the shade reviews, still, since jeff gerstmann and his bunch at giantbomb left, the reviews seem more "amateur-esque" and i don't trust the GS-scores alone anymore.

Plus, no one does as fun video-reviews as jeff, alex, ryan etc. did.

This review system will unjustly adjust the average rating for the game, especially when compared to all the other sites that has .5 rating system. Now, any game that I would give a 7.5 would have to be adjusted to 8.0. I think a game that I feel shouldn't deserver a 9.0, when I would have given a 8.5, I would have to maybe downgrade it to a 8.0 because I don't think it would deserver to be in the "calibre of games" that are 9.0. For example, a score of 8.5 is a fair score for Crysis 2 but I don't think Crysis 2 is in the same league as a game such as GTA V (which would be 9.0 or above). Plus, it degrades the ratings of older games. Also, what about when I want to rate an older game? The writer mentiones that it was adjusted to match current standards. At least with the .5 we could assign games that are older that would be more reflective of scores of games that came out say 2010 or before.

Please bring back the .5. If, not please at least allow older games, say, games that came out before 2010 or retro games to be assigned using the .5 rating system. I really like this site and have been visiting it since 1997.

Sorry, all you internet malcontents. I like the new site so far, and the second opinion idea for reviews is great.

If you use a site just to reinforce your preconceptions, why bother? Use multiple sites and opinions, and make up your own minds. No one is beholden to you to tell you what you want to hear.

If I have to choose between adblock and gamespot, I'm choosing adblock.

The truth about multiple reviews (as demonstrated by recent LoL and Bioshock reviews) is that you're trying to please everyone. It's a spineless move.

@Dsolow5 The AdBlock issue has been acknowledged by GameSpot staff, and is an unintentional result of the transition to the new site. There is a temporary fix outlined in the following forum topic, while the code is currently in the works to be resolved for all users.

Gamespot has been steadily going downhill it seems, whomever is making these decisions at the top for last 5 years seems to not really have a clue. I know they changed the page to charge more for advertising, thats obvious just by the placement. But come on, I will probably not frequent the site as much I did in the past and just go to IGN.

So, does it mean that next time Bethesda will come out with a totally broken game, because they will as it is their tradition, the first score will represent it? To then be adjusted a year later once finally they manage to fix it. Skyrim for PS3 was a 4.5 initially, and not above 7 in the other platforms.

You just did it for GTA V online after all, didn't you Gamespot?

@Lhomity @lostn No one said he had to be silenced. He can still give his opinions from another position.

If someone says something is awesome, and someone else working there says it's poor, and everyone else in the industry says it's awesome, then statistically the guy who said it's poor is in the minority, there's gotta be something wrong here and I'm betting it's with the guy who says it's poor. Now if the game was like Beyond Two Souls where the reviews have a wide spectrum of scores and no one really agrees with each other, that's one thing. But Infinite's metacritic rating is in the 90s, which means there's a consensus there.

If the same publication then issues two wildly differing reviews, it doesn't reflect well on them. Is he allowed to have a differing opinion? Absolutely. But the review can be published as a blog entry saying why he disagrees, rather than be offered as an alternative review.

I can see this system working if one guy thinks it's a 9 or 10, and another thinks it's an 8. But if one guy says it's a 10, and another says it's a 1, and you're going to say both reviews are equally valid, I think you're going to lose some credibility as a publication right there.

@Lhomity @lostn I don't know what gave people the idea that I don't think people should be allowed to state their opinions if they differ from everyone else's.

There's a good reason why other publications don't do multiple reviews.

Thirdly, comparing food to games is pretty stupid. Food is all about taste. A game review actually involves a lot of factual reporting, not just taste and opinion. If a game is buggy as hell and crashes a lot, deletes your save game and doesn't allow you to complete it, then it's buggy as hell. It's not an opinion. If the game's graphics are 8 bit or its music involves NES style screeching bleeps and the game costs $60, that's not an opinion either. You score a game based on facts presented.

As far as them having multiple reviews because people whine and moan about trivial things like review scores... I don't know of any widespread moaning about Bioshock Infinite being scored too highly, and Tom needed to step in and save people with a 4.0 review.

If GS wants to have two reviews for a game, a 9.0 or 9.5, followed by a 4.0, they can do that, but they're going to lose their relevance fast if they haven't already. IGN did this once before also. They gave some football management game a 9.0, and another reviewer from another region gave it a 1.0. This news spread quickly, and IGN became the laughing stock. The guy who gave it a 1.0 just didn't get it. He was expecting a football game, not a management sim. They quickly removed the 1.0 review, and have dropped multiple reviews since.

As for Beyond, people have already justified the low scores they gave. Bad controls, choices that are inconsequential, bad dialog and acting from supporting cast, etc.. Tom was willing to overlook all of that, which you would think would detract from the score. As for all the good things in Infinite, such as a wondrous looking world and great presentation, he was willing to overlook all that too as though it's not even a consideration when scoring.

@lostn A very large number of people enjoy eating chicken wings. Many of those people think chicken wings are awesome. I do not. Does that mean there is something wrong with me? With them? With chicken wings?

People have different tastes, and opinions. Everybody is different. There is always somebody who likes the things you dislike, and hates the things you love. It's not a statistical anomaly, or a flaw. It's just life.

The real problem here, is whenever a reviewer expresses feelings or opinions that don't reflect the so-called "popular" view, that person tends to become a target for the internet mob. Of course, majorities persecuting minorities is nothing new in this world.

Having a diverse range of views is not a bad thing. Having a situation where people aren't allowed to express their views because they differ from the (apparent) majority, is not a good thing. It is not the role of reviewers to ensure that their feelings conform with others.

I don't want to read reviews by somebody who is afraid to say what they really think, because they're worried that they'll be swarmed by rabid fanboys who don't understand what opinions are, and believe that people are stupid if they disagree with them.

I'm not a fan of the multiple reviews idea, personally, but it exists now because too many people whine and moan about trivial things like review scores, and demand second opinions. Which I feel is redundant. If one is reading a review expecting to be told only what one wishes to hear, then one should probably stop reading reviews and resort to back-of-the-box blurbs instead.
