About GameSpot Reviews

GameSpot may receive revenue from affiliate and advertising partnerships for sharing this content and from purchases through links.

Remember to read the text, not just the score!

GameSpot reviews come in all shapes and sizes. There are the standard game reviews you're used to seeing; there are reviews in progress; there are updated reviews of ongoing games; and now, there are scored reviews of other kinds of entertainment, like movies and TV.

All that sounds complicated, but it's really quite simple. While our approach to reviews can and will grow and change over time, the purpose of any GameSpot review remains the same: to provide a well-argued, honest, and thorough opinion about a game, movie, or TV show. But what's an "updated" review, exactly? And what do those numbers mean? This guide is here to help.

GameSpot Review Scale

Reviews don't boil down to just "I like it" or "I don't like it." GameSpot reviewers--which includes editors, video producers, and talented freelancers who fill in the gaps--are dedicated to thoughtful, robust criticism that takes a number of factors into account. The score is a point of reference, but if you want to really understand whether a game (or movie or TV show) is for you or not, you'll find what you need in the content of the review itself.

GameSpot uses a 10-point review scale with no increments--so there are no .5s. Here's a quick breakdown of what our scores represent:

10 - Essential

9 - Superb

8 - Great

7 - Good

6 - Fair

5 - Mediocre

4 - Poor

3 - Bad

2 - Terrible

1 - Abysmal

Reviews In Progress and Early Review Impressions

If you've been on GameSpot in the last few years, you've likely seen a review in progress or two before. Game reviews are published "in progress" if we've played a significant amount of the game but haven't been able to see some aspect of it fully--in many cases, it's the online component, which we of course can't experience properly until after the game has officially released. This way, you can get a good idea of what the game is like and what we think of it around the time of launch, keeping in mind that a few aspects might still be question marks.

You'll know it's a review in progress because of the headline, but just in case you miss that, the score is also blue instead of orange. We also make sure to include in the text of the review what we still have left to do before we can finalize the review--and keep in mind that details, including the score, are subject to change before we flip the switch.

In rare cases, we won't have access to a game until right before or even at launch. In these situations (which mostly consist of online-only games), we may publish "early review impressions" based on our first day or so with the game. These early impressions are unscored and a little less formal, and you'll know exactly what we've done and what we still have to do before we're comfortable moving on to the review in progress or even the final review.

Updated Reviews

We've been saying a lot about "finalizing" reviews, but in reality, a lot of games are not final at launch or even two weeks after launch, once servers are stable and bugs are patched out. More and more games change over months and even years, and so while a final GameSpot review is mostly final, there are some cases where we will want to revisit a game down the line and then write a new, updated review to reflect the times.

In these cases, a game will have to have changed significantly from the version we critiqued in our original review. But not every game that has changed gets this treatment--there are only so many hours in a day and so many GameSpot reviewers, so the decision to write a new review of a game comes down to the interests of both our staff and our readers. We use our best judgment based on our own experiences with a game and what people in general are playing, plus what needs fresh criticism as opposed to news about live events and updates.

Finally, an updated review is not a chance to "undo" a previous score or opinion. The original review still lives on GameSpot, and you'll be able to read both to get a picture of where the game was and what it is now.

If you have any questions about reviews on GameSpot, feel free to contact managing editor Tamoor Hussain.

Bioshock Infinite is both poor and superb at the same time.

If you want to look credible, Tom's review shouldn't be seen as an alternate review, but as a blog entry separate to the game's profile page. The score itself is also very sensationalist. There are enough positives in his written review for the score to be at least a 6. But he ignored all those and scored it based only on the negatives.

I think multiple reviews is just simply a very thinly veiled attempt to appeal to the masses.

So now we'll have one review that likes the game and a second review that doesn't.... that way everyone is happy.

Of course, that makes reviews worthless, but who cares as long as everyone gets to read a review they agree with so they can feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

@mtdew332 Our goal is to present you with different perspectives rather than just different opinions. There's a difference. We have no interest in simply posting one positive review and one negative review, but believe that there's value in, for example, the perspective of a newcomer versus the perspective of an experienced player.

@mtdew332 See, I hope that's really not the case. I mean, before I really thought this was a great idea, but when Tom gave Infinite a 4.0, I too thought, are they going to just have one person give it a high score, and have another person that dislikes it give it a controversial score to bring up discussion? I don't like this idea.

A review in itself is just an opinion piece. There is almost no objectivity to be found. Giving different perspectives then, allows us to judge a game based on merits we may find important or not.

@shingui5 It's not always helpful, at all. It'd be best to simply go off what you see, and how much it interests you; not by the review, though it's still easy to get a little bit riled up over a review that's easily 'wrong' in one's opinion.

It would be nice to mention the version of the game int he review, if that is part of what gets reviews obsolete?

Carolyn? OK, she may seem to have an agenda, and perhaps she does, but she's not often wrong with her scores, to say the least. She can sometimes, or often times depending on the person's views, say some things in her reviews that are off, but overall, like I said, her scores aren't often far from what the game deserves, which means one way or another, she enjoys or dislikes a game just about as much as others though... I guess that depends too. The person that I don't understand is Tom Mc Shea, he seems like a fine person, and I don't dislike him, but his stances on games are far off in my opinion.

Better start with Team Fortress 2, a review from launch might barely give the reader a glimpse of what the game is today.

I'd rather have the .5's back.

But I have no problem with multiple reviews, giving multiple scores. Everyone has an opinion, including/especially game reviewers, and you are entitled to agree, disagree, and give your own. Just keep it civil and don't bash because their opinion differs from yours. Opinions are not hard truths.

So Bioshock Infinite which is amazing gets a 9 on release but then McShea reviews it months later and gives it a 4 and that's legit GS? Can we look forward to more drunken reviews in the future?

A game over a 6 is worth playing, it just may have some rough edges that stand out more to some than others.

I review my own games, How can I take somebody else's word for it when they are different from me ? If anything I only want to know about how the game plays, Hate it when they harp on about certain characters or certain endings before you even get to play the game yourself. I never read or watch the review of a game I am looking forward to for them reasons, Like to go in with fresh eyes. To me relying on reviewers opinions on a game before choosing to by it Is being lazy and not willing to take a risk on a gut feeling.

I liked when there were tenths in scores way back when. I think it adds more nuance and avoids oversimplification of scores. I'd much rather see ratings based on different aspects of the game like story, controls, graphics, and special qualities. A total score is sort of pointless whereas giving people specific aspects of the game that shine and don't would allow people to come to there own conclusion about a game. Some people favor certain aspects over others and giving players the low down on each part of the game would be very helpful.

@sknight175216 Not like you can't still know about each individual aspect of a game by just reading the review, which is more helpful anyway than just seeing that a game got 8 in graphics. Is that 8 based on artistic or technical merit, or both? Yeah, you can't tell any of that just from a number.

@Zjarcal

What are you talking about? If a games visuals were rated an eight, it wouldn't be an eight just because of it's artistic merit or technical, it be in general. You take the pros and cons of the individual aspect, and get a number out of that. The way you can tell by the numbers is if you know how the reviewing system works, and no one is going to go based off of just one aspect.

@Zjarcal Oh, and when it comes to visuals, you factor in the artistic view, sure but there's a lot more to the technical side in my opinion, since you have to think about pop-in; frame rates; texture quality; anti-aliasing and so on. When it comes to San Andreas, I think what made it superb was due to the details packed into the setting, which was the artistic point of view, while the technical aspect was held up proficiently; that's why it got a nine, not just because of its art. If the game had more bugs and glitches (which is technical) it would have gotten worse. This may be obvious, but I just wanted to say it anyways.

Oh, if you're simply saying that without a description, it's pointless, then I agree entirely. You have to have something to say to add to the numbers, but when it's there, the numbers are great in my opinion. I was just saying that, reviews don't go based off of either or, they go off both aspects; so if the technical aspect was bad, it'd get some points docked, but if it was artistically great, it'd get a plus for that. They would never look at only the one aspect and base it off of it, which is what you made it seem like with the sentence "Is that 8 based on artistic or technical merit, or both?"

@NTM23 Of course it would be in general, but you don't know which one weighed in more just by looking at the 8 alone. The way reviews were done back when that system existed, it wasn't rare to see games without any real technical merit get 9s in graphics due to their art design alone.

I remember so many people freaking out at San Andreas getting a 9 in graphics for instance, complaining about how other more technically sound games got lower scores in that department, yet if they read the review they could see that 9 was based almost entirely on the artistic merit.

The system never really worked in a way were you could accurately say which aspect was the deciding factor for an individual component's score, so I don't really buy into the idea that knowing how the system worked could let you simply look at the numbers and walk away well informed.

@NTM23 Yeah, if it got an 8 on visuals it could be the average of a 10 and a 5. I'd prefer to know what exactly earned the 10 and what earned the 5. I think that's what Zjarcal meant =)

@sknight175216 They used to have gameplay; graphics; sound; value, and tilt. They would assign individual numbers to those on a .5 scale, and come up with the final score after that; I liked that.

I get what they're trying to do by removing .5's but what happens once you run into a game that's more than good but not great? You have to round to the nearest rating then end up under or overrating a game thus warping that game's image.

I know reading the entire review is the best way to get a feel for a game but many people who only care about the score or are just passing through and happen to see the score will judge the game solely on that, and this will result in the game's image being unjustly hurt or someone may buy a game that wasn't worth the money.

Over generalization of scores will also hurt a games place in history by hurting is average score because a reviewer decided to round up instead of down.

@R083R70 Honestly, if people seriously only look at a score to decide if something is worth a purchase, they kind of have it coming if it ends up biting them in the ass.

There's a big difference between games with a '9' score and a 9.5 score. Red Dead Redemption wasn't a '10', a few faults here and there, but it was definitely better than a '9'. I'm really disappointed with these review changes and thought that the 20 rating system was great. Whole numbers are too big of a difference, and it means games that shouldn't be an '7' or '8' will wither get too high a score or maybe get dropped down to '6' or '7' when they deserve better.

EDIT: Wow, Jeff gave out a ridiculous amount of high scores. Looking at the list now, he gave..

Ocarina a 10, THPS 3 a 10, THPS 2 a 9.9, Tekken 3 a 9.9, Goldeneye a 9.8, Tekken Tag a 9.6, GoW a 9.6, GTA III, Vice City, and SA 9.6s, Castlevania: CotM a 9.6, Halo 3 a 9.5, Banjo-Kazooie a 9.5, Orange Box a 9.5, Unreal Tournament a 9.5, Burnout 3 a 9.5, and so on. Not knocking on these games or his ratings, just an observation.

@NTM23 @Stebsis 2 actually got a 9.9; it was 3 that got a 10. 9.9 might as well be a 10 though.

Other than the ones mentioned above, I think Soul Calibur is the only other game that got a 10.

I'd like a reviewer re-visiting a review after some time has passed, with the purpose of adjusting the score up/down and explaining what has changed (i.e. bug fixes) or if the game is ageing well.

I also wouldn't mind hearing multiple reviewers opinions about a game, but having two completely separate reviews is just too much. I'm happy to be told about the game's content by a single reviewer, with the second reviewer only being needed to state where they had different feelings about the game.

What I don't like is a separate review for a game which was reviewed a long time ago, where the changes to the game are minimal or non-existent; I am referring to the Bioshock Infinite review. This was just pointless. I'd already played the game and the main review was already good enough to inform about the game.

Having multiple reviews also discredits each of the reviews, and the integrity of the site. Some of us will make our buying decisions on the gamespot reviews, and would be upset if we purchased a bad game because there was a good and a bad score on the site. Pointing us towards user reviews is also bad because they just aren't professional reviewers, so even if some of their opinions can be trusted, there's a lot of people who just aren't discerning enough to make a judgement about quality.

Also, a professional reviewer should write in a way that describes as best as possible how other players are going to feel about the game; not just stating their personal experiences. This means the score shouldn't differ much between reviewers, or they are doing their job wrong.

@angelini Because they were basically "The Good" and "The Bad" but in picture form. So they were redundant and could not be as specific as the good and bad text points.

Also, I remember another reason being that even reviewers couldn't tell what they all represented at a glance.
