Is it really an improvement?

Saints Row 4 is a tough one for me to crack. I don't hate it, I wanna make that clear from the beginning. I have enough fun playing the game to the point where I've beaten the campaign and DLC missions plus some other side activities. I've explored all the game has to offer before really sitting back and thinking about my overall experience.

Visually, It's very similar to Saints Row 3. I am a bit disappointed in that because I expected a step up visually and just didn't get it. Add in a few minor bugs and glitches, It's definitely a disappointing aspect of the game. The gameplay is expanded upon and I really enjoyed that. It's a lot more fast-paced and comedic, A lot more defined as well and that's a huge plus.

Everything else is very much the same - The map is the same, The activities are similar and the plot of the campaign is rather weak as well. Sure, It's funny in some parts but for the majority of the time, There is nothing going on. And I think that is a huge problem for this series in general. They still do a poor job of creating a story that can capture you and keep you invested from start to finish. It's never been there for the series and probably never will be.

And to go back to everything being the same, That's another problem for me. It feels a lot more like I am playing a Saints Row 3 DLC than I am playing a full retail release. It's like playing Saints Row 3.5 and not a heavily improved sequel. It's all very much the same template but with some minor gameplay differences. And even with all the DLC, which takes maybe 2-3 hours to finish the missions for, there isn't enough content to keep you invested for 20+ hours. Saints Row 4, much like Saints Row 3, is the kind of game I finish quickly and put away quickly.

Overall: 6/10
Aside from some gameplay improvements, Saints Row 4 isn't even a slight step up from Saints Row 3. It doesn't even feel like a legit sequel. There just isn't enough here and that's such a huge disappointment because these games can be really fun at times but at other times, It feels like such a bore repeating the same repetitive mission objectives and activities over and over again.
