Unexpectedly amazing

User Rating: 10 | Shadow of the Colossus PS2
At first I was nervous about this title when I heard it was basically 13 boss battles. Thankfully I was wrong. The worry that the game wouldn't be long enough or fun enough was completely sidestepped by the unique boss encounters and the fact that just getting to the boss and even figuring out how to take it down was more challenging than surviving the boss.

Probably the most noteworthy thing to mention about this game is how it succeeds in making the player feel the epicness of taking down a colossi. Sometimes I felt like the ultimate badass such as when you managed to grab onto the flying colossus and the music picks up just as you are taken high into the air. Rarely does a game move me like this as few games fail to achieve a sense of excitement this game succeeds at.

I only hope the next game "The Last Guardian" can hold up to the new bar that was raised with this game. The sense of scale, ambitious graphics for a PS2 game will make it difficult for the next installment to beat it. Hopefully the next game takes the best of Ico and the best of Colossus and makes something truly wonderful.
