An underrated Nintendo DS classic

User Rating: 9 | Super Mario 64 DS DS

When I was a 9 year old boy I saw the Nintendo DS and I wanted one badly. I wanted to play Super Mario 64 DS on it. I wanted that raw 3D action in the palm of my hands. Something that I wanted after being long exposed to nothing but middling cheap Gameboy Advanced games with compressed 2D graphics. I wanted that real 32 bit experience. I couldn't get until 2 years after the matter. When I did, I fell in love. There are some draw backs but some new stuff at the same time.

STORY

Dear Mario, I baked you a cake. Please come over. -Princess Peach.

You know the drill. Save princess Peach from the evil Bowser. But this time with your Plummer pals.

GAMEPLAY

The gameplay of Super Mario 64 DS is the same as before. They have included some new content. You have new mini games and play as 4 unlockable characters of which have no effect on the narrative if there was any.

If you do not care about camera controls this game is your treat. Players can control Mario by using the touch screen and map.

The power ups are fun.

It's the same gameplay. You get 7 missions for each stage. Some vaguely meaning mysterious things you will not understand. Secret stars. Sometimes Mario 64 gets old because of it's repetitive nature. Do the thing and get the star.

GRAPHICS

The graphics of New Super Mario 64 DS are great! Mario has arguably more soul. The DS is better at textures than the Nintendo 64 thanks to the extra space of DS carts. It's not the same if that's what you are wondering but it works. This means any creepiness of the original is gone. No more blurry textures but nicely painted ones. It's different. If you're wondering. No you can't play with Mario's face like in days of old. You can only turn him into an ink sketch and play around with him warping him and such.

SOUND

The sound is the same but every time you punch the wall you get no bwoowoowoo SFX which is boring.

OVERALL.

Super Mario 64 DS is worth a purchase.
