Until the Nintendo 64's release, the closest to 3D you could get was by adding extra shadow detail on the characters as they ran across the screen. The cameras role was the same throughout the years, its sole purpose to simply scroll with the character. Nintendo realized its challenge, and took the next step with Super Mario 64. The result? A masterpiece.
Super Mario 64 had a lot to lose if players were absolutely appalled by the 3D setup and completely new camera view. Fortunately, the graphics came out beautifully, and the camera worked very well.
Mario's adventure itself was an unforgettable experience. The maps were exigent enough to make you think, but not difficult to the point of making you slam down your controller and walking away in rage. The secret maps in the castle are fun to explore and the slides are arguably the one of the best parts of the game. The whole time you are playing, you find yourself even deeper in the adventure with the incredible music which beautifully matches the atmosphere of each map.
In conclusion, Super Mario 64 is an unforgettable, enchanting experience, with a fantastic soundtrack, amazing maps and a brilliant advance in gaming technology.
