Its not called The Amazing Spider-Man for nothing!

I honestly think The Amazing Spider-Man is one of the best games in the superhero movie tie-in game series; something about Spider-Man really works when it comes to free roaming games, and while I loved Shattered Dimensions and Edge of Time I really wished we would have explored these worlds at our leisure, with The Amazing Spider-Man the free roaming returns in all its glory and allows us to swing around whenever and wherever we want in this game.

The Amazing Spider-Man game is set after the film its based on, unfortunately this is where my one problem of this game comes from; because the game came out before the film it effectively spoiled the ending of the film by showing what had happened to the Lizard and by mentioning the fate of one of the characters from the film, as such I recommend playing the game after seeing the film so you won't spoil the end for yourself.

The combat used in this game is remarkably similar to the Batman Arkham games; while it isn't as smooth as the Arkham combat its still a load of fun to fight bad guys using a very different fighting system in a Spider-Man game and with wrestling moves as a fighting style I've never seen Spider-Man use and make it still look acrobatic while incorporating the wrestling moves.

The graphics and sound are awesome; while it isn't the film cast voicing their characters they do a good job bringing their characters to life and making sure they behave like how they do in the film. And while some of the indoor levels look a bit bland the whole of New York looks pretty damn good; the highlight of the graphics are the character models, especially on the spider-Man model as the costume looks very detailed.

The combat isn't the only thing borrowed from the Arkham games; The Amazing Spider-Man uses a similar camera angle that brings it very close to Spider-Man.........which makes web swinging the best its ever been in any Spider-Man game; true it hasn't got the web swinging of Spider-Man 2, but it makes you feel like Spider-Man due to the close camera angle as you can see his feet narrowly sweep the ground as he free falls from the air and starts web swinging with some very smooth looking web swinging animations. Also the charged jump mechanic has made a return........and since Spider-Man 2 I have loved super jumps in video games and was so gutted when it wasn't used in Web of Shadows and I was so happy to see it back here. I will say though as the Gamespot review points out the main strength of The Amazing Spider-Man is when you're outside web swinging around New York instead of being in the in door levels, which can be a bore sometimes.

One other minor negative thing the game does is it doesn't have never ending side quests like Spider-Man 2 does instead once you beat all the side missions you're left to swing around a seemly crime-less New York.

Despite the two negative things the game has I can honestly say this is the best free roaming Spider-Man game in the last four years and one of the better superhero movie tie in games in a while, so if you haven't played it now then I recommend you give it a go
