This game is old. 22 years at the time of this "review". That's like 40 years in gaming. I wasn't able to play the original TLOZ: Ocarina of Time, as I only had hand-held gaming devices. I mostly enjoyed TLOZ via the top-down installments. However, I was impressed with how much I enjoyed playing through Ocarina of Time. I am a TLOZ fan so that bias was already present. But the adventure was fun, not too long, had just the right amount of challenge for an old game....and I even felt a bit of dis-belief that this was released in 1998. I think the graphics update on the 3DS allows for providing a similar feeling a player must have felt booting it up on the N64 in 1998 (when this type of experience was very new). The game is simple from a modern perspective but the combat, puzzles, linear story and fun little side quests feel just right for a hand-held experience.
If you want to play the latest in adventure open world style games and/or don't enjoy going back in time in terms of graphics and mechanics, I don't think this will be fun for you.
For players who enjoy:
- Nintendo
- Adventure/exploration
- Cartoonish medieval/magic style fantasy world
- Small scale open world RPGs
- Exploring the early chapter in a franchise (That establishes a lot of what comes after)
- Hero's journeys
If you enjoyed Ocarina of Time, I think its only natural you continue with Majora's Mask.
