Almost but not quite

User Rating: 5 | The Vanishing of Ethan Carter PS4

As I started this adventure I noticed immediately it's similarities to "Everybody's Gone to the Rapture" not in it's story but it's form. A slower paced, 1st person adventure where you must discover how to play as you go. The game even warns you it will not "hold your hand."

This is a mystery game, and you are some kind of detective or P.I. there to solve the vanishing of Ethan Carter a young boy. It's set in what seems like an abandoned or highly neglected train/mining town. Oddly enough for me it was kind of funny as I live in the train capitol of the world. I was thinking, NO! I want to escape this place lol. Just a side note.

It took some time to understand the way the game worked and it was refreshing to encounter some very uniquely executed puzzles. The story at first seemed very interesting. However, there were times when the story got a bit "over the rainbow." The voice acting was acceptable. Graphics were great.

The unfortunate aspect of this game comes from a severe lack of objective. Many hours I spent wandering aimlessly encountering either nothing at all, meaningless areas, or actually finding something that didn't seem to go to anything. I did solve many puzzles but some had no clear or even moderately defined link to solve it.

As with EGR, there is no map which I think might have been necessary in this game,to at least show you where you are in comparison to another area, and so you can visualize where you have been and have not been. Even if I had the patience to wander around for another 2 hours in the game to figure out where to go or what to do next I think I would have to give it this rating even if I finished the game. I think most players would find this frustrating.

In the future if this developer wants to make another game of this kind I would highly recommend that there be something added to mitigate the wandering issue. Perhaps a non invasive in game guidance character, a map, or at the very least a sprint button to make it faster to return to where you might find something.

This title was on sale when I bought it and I recommend going ahead and giving it a try at sale price if you want something different, more laid back, or if you liked EGR.
