Great, next they'll make female hygiene/sanitary supplies akin to bringing weapons and drugs to school. I get it's a subjects guys are uncomfortable around, but it's something they can't mandate on everyone else not to talk about. Like, get over it. This is effing sad, a little hilarious, but mostly sad. And I have no doubt they'll succeed, as Florida's are just a bunch of methamphetamine fueled Jesus freaks.

This gives me some reflection when I was working in a warehouse, we'd stow our CDA and hazmat items in a designated area, for stuff like Drano and Windex and Raid, and dishwasher soap, clothing detergent, etc. The gross toxic chemical stuff we don't want to leak around food people put in their mouth, etc. I'd keep finding maxi-pads and tampons stored away there though. I was like, who keeps putting this shit on these shelves. Well, never found out. It made me recall a part of a Philip K Dick book I read, Confessions Of A Crap Artist, where this guy's wife asked him to grab her some feminine hygiene pads from the grocery store, and he was embarrassed having to go down the aisle, grab them, look the cashier in the face and ring them up, so after he got them he came home and beat his wife over the whole ordeal. So, who stowed those feminine products in the CDA/hazmat area, well, probably someone like that.

I hate period blood with a passion--it's gross, stinky, and I just don't like blood (from anywhere) in general--but this is bullshit.

It's almost hilarious. Almost...

Stuff like this needs to be discussed at schools. NEEDS. You can't always rely on mom and dad.

--------

@lamprey263: rofl love that scene. "Eyyy, we're blood brothers."

I've read of incidents not too far off of that happening before. Like, girl has her first period, has no idea what's going on (because the school doesn't teach sex ed and her parents are prudes), teacher is a guy so he has no clue...

...so she manages to go to the nurse but the nurse can't issue anything because all she has are tampons (not pads) and giving a little girl "something to stick IN her vagina" would be illegal, and she can't discuss it with her because "that would be grooming a minor".

Idiotic.

Periods aren't sexual. Discussing the human body isn't inherently sexual. Being naked isn't sexual. You don't make porn or have sex every time you take a shower or take a piss or have your period. We Americans need to get over our hangups with the human body.

I'd assume most parents wished they didn't have to have the squeamishly uncomfortable conversations with their kids, rather let the teachers do it. But, guess there's a lot of nuts out there that worry the schools are indoctrinating kids to be militant transsexual hedonists.

This is probably how the GOP wishes all mothers approached the subject to their daughters about their changing bodies...

Maybe they can just ban school so they can more quickly achieve their ultimate dream of keeping the populace as uneducated as possible. Doing so will own the libs for sure.

This puts all the responsibility on parents to teach their children about pregnancy, sex, birth control etc. Literal fascism I say.

My god this author is unbearable lol

Let's flood the airwaves with talk of blood. Let us talk about our aches, our pains, our moods, our needs, our cultures, our connectivity. Let us listen. And we'll see that there is nothing that Florida legislators can do to stop our much larger consciousness-raising that's underway, try as they might.

Nobody gives a shit about your bloody vagina being taught in elementary school lady lmao

I don't think teaching elementary aged children being "naked" isn't sexual nor inappropriate is a tactful way to address human anatomy. It's creepy and this line of thinking is inherently troubling.

I didn't say that.

I was trying to say that we oversexualize things, and we should try to lessen it. Obviously I think we need to protect kids from predators and the like but I also don't think we should teach them that if you're naked, it's either a.) something to be ashamed of or b.) inherently sexual.

It's just the human body, that's all.

Why are schools responsible for stuff like this. It's not a baby sitting institution, schools don't have children and people hired in schools are not responsible for the students. They have a job to do. If teachers are suppose to start parenting it should be a red alert. I couldn't imagine being a teacher and now you are starting to become responsible for students. That specific matter if these are real females and not monkeys should be a personal subject matter and should be treated like one privately. If these are monkeys were are talking about then yeah it should go the route it's going.

Well if it's banned who's supposed to stop it from happening, I'm guessing teachers. Which goes to the point I was trying to make by keeping it private.

Pretty much. I don't really like the insinuation of it being "creepy" or "troubling", it prevents open and constructive discussion about a complex issue that people tend to have a kneejerk, conservative response to. One that is harmful towards children and the eventual adults they grow into.

Context is everything. Should pre-pubescent kids be comfortable naked at the pool with random adults around? Of course not.

Should pre-pubescent kids be comfortable naked around other kids at the pool with parents around? In most cases, yes. We had such a surprisingly nice day on Sunday spending Easter at a family members house, the kids all wanted to go swimming. But no one had their swim trunks since it's been so cold. Not a big deal, all the kids stripped down and went naked.

Is that creepy? Troubling? I think if you say "yes", then you have some serious hang-ups and should probably get some help.

I guess what I'm trying to get at is we shouldn't feel like one's body is the problem, just our attitude towards it.

this is a pretty stupid argument to make.

so punish a kid in school who has shitty, lazy, scared parents unwilling or too afraid to talk about certain subjects with their children by withholding information about their bodies because some old white twats in floriduh can't dissociate a period from that tingly feeling they get when they look at schoolkids?

How would they be punished? So you are basically saying it should be thought in school worldwide for everyone because of that rare situation you mentioned? Just know not everyone sees things your way and why everything in this world is being separated. You will have folks like you and other will live differently

The fact they linked Salon.com is hillarious. Less then 10% of girls fit his scenario. Regardless the fact you would be upset this isn't a priority in elementary school is just odd to me.

1 in 10 is a big number when you consider how many girls that age are in schools across America. It's basic common education that wasn't even controversial when I attended school in the 'Reagan Conservative' 80's.

These fuckers have gone batshit insane, and you defend them. I think that says enough.

1 in 10 is a big number when you consider how many girls that age are in schools across America. It's basic common education that wasn't even controversial when I attended school in the 'Reagan Conservative' 80's.

These fuckers have gone batshit insane, and you defend them. I think that says enough.

really idk what to say now.

We were watching movies like the below in elementary school on the old reel-to-reel. In fourth grade the boys watched movies about wet dreams and stuff and the girls watched their stuff in another room, but by sixth grade we were watching movies about sex and STDs and pregnancy and even watched an uncensored birth. In Elementary school. In the 80's. In fucking Tennessee of all places. It was no big deal. It was a normal part of growing up.

This puts all the responsibility on parents to teach their children about pregnancy, sex, birth control etc. Literal fascism I say.

Well this is just a straw-man.

I think it's fine for parents to have this responsibility, but it's also fine to allow schools to teach these things. Studies universally show this educations works for all 3 things you listed. There isn't even a debate as the vast data is concerned.

Teaching elementary school kids about periods is not significant to me. I could care less if it is or isn't. Probably best to leave that conversation to the parents/guardians of the child. Teachers should focus on actual reading and math skills. But I'm not going to care either way.

This to me is outrage bait, insignificant, a distraction. Much more worried about the USD heading towards collapse and the possibility of WW3.

Florida waiting untill middle school to teach puberty to people's kids is fine, I don't see the problem.

And what age do you think puberty occurs because it's not the same for everyone.

Exactly, why are the GOP being outrage at such ridiculous things and going through the trouble of making these laws?

Same for there insane books bans, college class bans, and weird ass college takeovers. What the fucking shit is all of this nonsense?

You may be outraged but I don't give a shit if Flordia decides not to teach puberty in elementary school.

Who cares. Why is Salon even writing this article? It's not for people like myself, who don't give a shit if they don't teach puberty in elementary school. It seems more like it's for the people really upset that they won't teach this in elementary school.

You won't catch me out protesting with picket signs over elementary schools not teaching kids about puberty. I truly don't care if this bill passes, seems fine, have no strong feelings against it or for it.

Of course it matters. I suppose if one is a misogynist it might not matter that it could be traumatizing to young girls if they don't know what's happening. Is that what you're trying to tell us?

It doesn't matter if elementary school teachers don't teach puberty to other people's kids. Not the roll of school anyway. Let the families decided how to talk about periods and boners to their little kids.

If your so mad go protest and demand that elementary schools teach little kids about periods you weirdo. I won't stop ya. but I'll laugh at ya
