Hi.

My HDD died on me a couple of days ago and I had to buy a new one and start from scratch: reinstall Windows and all my programs.

When I synced my iPhone to my new iTunes on my new hard drive, the only files I was able to sync from my iPhone to my computer were the ones (music, books and apps) I had bought on the iTunes store. I've looked around for iPhone to computer transfer programs, but I haven't found any of them that are free. And those that offer an evaluation mode just mess with you: you can only transfer a few files.

So if I don't buy any of these programs, the only way I'll be able to have my music on my new iTunes is to extract again all my music from my CD collection. Is that correct?

Try iFunBox. That's what I always use with my brother's iPhone. It basically accesses your APple Device in a flash drive manner.
