So I have upgraded to AMD Ryzen 7 5800X 3D, a cpu that runs a little hotter than most. Its paired with a 240mm AIO cooler, that was keeping a Ryzen 7 2700 at under 30 degrees idle, and 50 degrees in gaming.

What happens when I boot into windows now is the fans are fairly loud for about a minute, CPU temps are in high 70s sometimes 80. Then after a minute if goes down to idle of about 34-35.

Temps while gaming are around 60-70, temps in cinebench & Prime 95 when usage 100% doesn't go above 75.

Wondering if this is normal for this CPU or not, I know its still in the safe temps but not sure if it should boot so hot, and the fan noise during boot is annoying.

I don't think its a thermal paste or cooler issue, because the system wouldn't get down to decent temps and maintain them through gaming and stress tests.

System Spec

AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D

Gamemax Ice Chill 240mm AIO Cooler

RTX 2070 Super

24 gb DDR 4 2333mhz Corsair Vengeance

@thehig1: Should be fine. Probably just running the boot up programs and setting up background processes on start up. Also, it is loading the cooling profile. If the temps and usage didn't drop, then I would be concerned.

@BassMan: kind of thought this too, its just different to me as the 2700 didnt do this, but I guess the 5800x3D is just a hotter CPU with all that extra cache.

also thinking is my motherboard an issue, its a gigabyte a320m-h. It doesn't support the CPU by default only when BIOS flashed to latest version.

Wonder if the motherboard is hampering the CPU in some way

@thehig1: I would definitely flash it to the latest version for max compatibility. It is supporting it though, otherwise you wouldn't even be able to get into Windows. I wouldn't worry about it being an older board. It is still an AM4 board at the end of the day and that is all the 5800X3D requires. As long as the bios is configured to support it, shouldn't be any issues.

Yeah that seems a little hot given the cooler, but still withing the thermal limits of the cpu (90C).

Maybe see if you can find any other benchmarks with the same cpu and cooler to compare with (might be a long shot for the exact combo).

If it doesn't get above 75C under normal use it's probably fine.

Lol if anything I would suspect Windows is doing something stupid. Nothing makes my PC chug like Windows search indexer. 🤣

@thehig1: Ryzen 5000 series run hotter than 3000 or older Ryzens. The 5800X3D even on a 360mm rad can hit 80C. These cpus will continue boost themselves in clockrate until power, max clocks or temp limit is reached. The 5800X3D also has another layer on top of the die the 3D cache which will increase temps abit vs a normal 5800x.

Also the 5000 series temps will fluctuate all over the place too one moment its 35C then it will jump to 65C or higher then drop right back down. Its all because of how the cpu boosts itself to give you max performance. I wouldn't worry about the temp spikes under 85C with Ryzen 5000 series.

@04dcarraher: what you described is exactly what my cpu does lol. Its just slightly annoying hearing the fans reacting to little things every time the cpu usage increases a little.

Good to know its fairly typical though, going to upgrade the fans to more efficient quieter ones on my rad and call it a day.

@thehig1:

You could set a custom fan curve where the rpm does not ramp up until 75C.

@04dcarraher: tried messing the with the fan curve, all that happens if I do what you said is the temps go to 75 quicker and the fans firing up is more extreme.

I've found a curve with seems best, start a little higher than default but doesn't go up as steep.

I need new fans for that rad, the fans with it are terrible.

update :

Installed better fans on the rad and its way better, temps only go to about 60 at start, 75 at stress testing, and around 35 idle.

Noise levels are back to nearly the same as with my older 2700 cpu.

Fans I got were Thermaltake tough fan 12.

@thehig1: Hmmm. Maybe they just weren't optimized for pressure and couldn't force enough air through.

Glad to hear you were able to improve the setup!
