Poll Gaming Chip Shortage to last until 2023. Grab whatever you can? (19 votes)

Yes. Grab what you can. 37%
No. Still hold out. 63%

According to PC Gamer. Intel is warning again that chip shortage will last throughout 2022 and until 2023.

https://www.pcgamer.com/intel-once-again-warns-of-chip-shortage-continuing-until-2023/

In my previous poll, I had asked if I should skip this generation of GPUs as I buy Gaming GPUs every other generation the last having owned a nVidia Pascal GPU and asking if I should hold out for RTX 4000 series or RDNA 3 GPU later next year. Most of you suggested to wait while a small minority said to get what you can. Now, I am re-thinking that having seen the chip shortage continue and its supposed to continue until 2023 as the PC Gamer report stated. I had put in a RTX 3090 before in my cart before only to see it disappear before I go to checkout :(. Knowing that I want to jump to 4K, get whatever I can?

I've grabbed what I can.

  • RTX 3060 - in the server computer. Can double as a gaming system if needed. Retired my 980Ti from this system and sold it for $300
  • RTX 3060Ti - Retired my 980Ti from my main gaming rig and sold it for $300. Used this 3060Ti for about 2 months before upgrading. Probably keep it as a backup/spare GPU, just in case. You can never be too careful these days.
  • RTX 3080 - this is what I'm gaming on now.
  • RTX 3060Ti - (different one from above), putting in my kid's gaming rig
  • RTX 3070Ti - shipping in sometime this week. Still pondering if I should gift it to my brother and sell off his 5700XT for about a grand or just outright sell this one.

EVGA queue and newegg shuffle (GPUs only, no combo deals) has been good to me. Along with a random visit to my local Micro Center where I was able to purchase one of the 3060Ti because they had stock in the middle of the afternoon still, from their morning delivery (I was hoping a 3070 or 3080, but they had sold the last ones just before I got there and I wasn't looking to spend the money on a 3080Ti or 3090).

Any new GPU and highly sought after CPUs will be hard to come by. If you're hoping to land a Nvidia 4xxx series or AMD 7xxx series, don't hold your breath. They'll fly off the shelves just like this generation has. Folks will be looking to scalp and mine.

A non-GPU related purchase (I guess it could be considered a GPU related since it does use a GPU) that I just got was an Xbox Series X. Splitting the cost (which, by the way, I got at retail price) with my younger brother and we're giving it to my kids for a Christmas present from him and I when he comes up to visit in a week or two.

I've had good lucky with this current gen as of lately. Keep at it and you'll eventually find something worthwhile for your needs.

As for 4k gaming, I think it's overrated. I'm enjoying 1440p at a high refresh rate of 120hz. So much better over 1080p at 60hz.

It will last even longer, and I'm still waiting.

You spent about 10k on GPUs. Should've invested that money instead.

@attirex:

If you're referring to my post, I spent around $3300, not $10k. This is also not taking into consideration that I sold my 980Ti cards for $600. So, in the end I only spent around $2700.

I could easily sell a 3060Ti for $900 and the 3070Ti for around $1200. If I did that, that means I would've spent about $600 for a 3060, 3060Ti and a 3080.

I think I did pretty good all things considered.

It depends on what you already got, since old GPU's are also overpriced. Right now I can sell my GTX 1060 for €300, so I might actually pull the plug on 6600/XT or 3060 12GB. Old GPU's might lose value faster, and they can of course brake.

Based on all this info, maybe I can sell my two 970s for, like, US $40,000 when I get a new rig next year?

This GPU sitch needs to settle down, regardless. Sigh.

I grabbed 6600XT for a decent price. I would've loved to grab a 3060Ti for the same price but thanks to the events I've settled with a bit worse card.

I'll let the price decide. If 4080 has a decent price here and my economy allows it, I'll order it as fast as I can.

That means a reduction in price compared to what 3080 costs here now. The cheapest 3080 I see listed with a price where I bought mine is still 400$ above what I gave for mine.

On the other hand, skipping a generation does save me some money.

Snagged a RTX 3070 Noctua Edition. Got rid of the 3080 FE, shitty warranty considering it will not allow you to change the worst thermal pads in existence.

40 series might be different. Nvidia paid in advance a chip contract to be first (lets hope) and have plenty of 40 series supply when they come out. we will see how they deal with scalpers and miners (if it's possible to do so), but if everything goes fine this summer.

6600XT ain't bad if you got it for a decent price.

This was embarrassing what nVidia did with their founder's edition. I had to switch out the thermal pads to get the ridiculous VRAM temps under control. Now, less than 10-20 C less temp compared to the original depending on the load. You would think that with the amount of cash nVidia is bringing in they would use better thermal pads especially for a $1500+ graphics card.

Man....

Offered up my NIB EVGA 3070Ti FTW3 Ultra on TPU for $1100. I wanted to offer TPU members to get a solid card for not extreme scalper pricing, but no one wanted it.

I put the card on Amazon for $1350 and it sold within 5 hours of posting it.

Still debating if I put my 3060Ti for sale. Probably could almost double my money for it.....

Folks are still paying crazy high costs for new GPUs.

Well, there's always someone willing to put a higher price for the same thing to earn more money.

If you've got a good card I'd say sell it to a friend if someone needs an upgrade - better than selling it random people who will use it for either crypto mining or resell the same card even higher just to make profit out of the deal.

It pains me to say to this but I don't even know if I will ever even upgrade my PC again my interest in gaming is practically zero at this point. I'll just keep replaying the good old shit.

@warmblur: I am sure you have some old backlog games that will run well on your current hardware. I would recommend playing those until hardware prices become more reasonable. Then you can play some of the newer demanding games when you have new hardware.

That is what I did when my GTX 1080 kicked the bucket in Nov. 2020.... I had to use a GTX 960 2gb for slightly more than 5 months, I played less demanding games, older games and ones I never got around too until I was able to grab a RX 6700xt off of Newegg shuffle. Then in late August was able to snag a RTX 3080ti for MSRP from EVGA Queue.

@04dcarraher: Damn, that is one hell of a GPU roller coaster ride you have been on. Congrats on the 3080 Ti. I had to slum it out with a 1060 for a month or so when I sold my 2080 Ti and was waiting for my 3080 to arrive. I got it 2 weeks after launch at MSRP (back-ordered on launch day), so can't complain too much. :)

@BassMan: Yea that 5 months trying to get something within reason was awful.... Once I got that 6700xt I had my reservations on getting that AMD gpu. But I was pleasantly surprised, only had one major issue with HDCP black screen flicker issue at 144hz, but was able to fix that in AMD control panel by disabling it. Their interface is better than Nvidia's control panel, but when it comes to older games its performance wasn't the best.

Ended up selling the 6700xt for an un-scalped price knocked off $100 for what I paid for it, I had it for close to 5 months, not to cause more aggravation for someone else.
