Can anyone tell me why we haven't had one yet?  Honestly!  Just give me an updated X-Wing: Alliance, only without all the 'family missions.'

Also, has anyone played the updated Tie Fighter version that uses the Alliance engine?  Is it any good?  Think it would still hold up to todays standards if I can find a copy?

Unfortunately, the space-sim genre is essentially dead. I doubt there'll be any new versions of these AWESOME classics..

Tie FIghter is one of my all-time favorite games, a pity it ended with only the first game.

I imagine they could make a freaking amazing looking version of TIE Fighter these days.  I'd probably buy a new joystick just for that.

Freespace is an Amazing game for sure, I still play it to this day. I would still have to give it to Tie Fighter though for my favorite all time Space Sim. Freelancer, Dark Star One, and X3 are also great titles as well. There are two promising Space Sims coming this year called Space Force 2 and Galactic Command - Echo Squad, check them out. It's a shame the genre has really slipped, but there always seems to be a diamond in the ruff here and there.

Have you tried the Source Code project though, and the multitude of campaigns out there including the full first game camapign including cut secenes, ships, voice acting and all levels modded to number two..  I would say unmodded Freespace and Tie fighter are equal.. But add the mod community and Freespace 2 blows any Space sim out of the water..  With tons of great user made campaigns some with voice acting spanning for hours of game play, lets not forget the numerous campaigns and full mods that are still being made for the game...

It is a shame that Interplay dragged the Freespace 2 lincense down with them.. What I would give for Volition to be allowed to makea  3rd..
