i dont get it, like why do people buy new parts when they dont even do anything right now. like so many people brag about their sli 8800's and their quad core cpu. but theres no point, bc no game out uses that or shows what it can do. whether you get 200 fps or 300 fps with it, whats the difference? so why dont people wait till games come out that use them, and by then theyll be half price. ill never understand some people...

Well, let's see. You buy a cheaper processor and GPU that can run the games of today. In the future these won't run everything as great as they did in the past. If you have the hardware, you're future-proof. If not, you're looking to upgrade everything all over again which can be more than just buying the heavy duty hardware in the first place. And if you have the money, why settle for less.

Some people have real jobs, and $1000 is a reasonable price if computers are your hobby. I know if I ever graduate from my major (BME) and get a good job at an engineering firm, I'll have a pc like that too. Also, a quad core isnt useless. PC's are for more than games. A quad core cpu can execute twice as many simulatneous threads as a dual core, which is even more multitasking. (and a Q6600 is supposed to drop in price to about $450 soon) =)

Imagine running a virus scan, compressing some massive file list, listening to music, playing a game, and converting some movie files all at once with no performance decrease.

When you buy something like sli 8800's you could call it "future proofing" your machine. If you just buy the boarder line cpu's and gpu's you will have you upgrade the next time a game comes out.

Think SLI 8800 GTXs are overkill right now no matter how you look at it. Just one can run any game today to the max at like 2048x1536 right? So you just paid $1100 for a job that $550 can do. When you do need that extra GTX, pick one up when it falls to $300 or something, boom you just saved $250.

Why did you buy a E6300, it is also useless atm for gaming...
You also bought DDR2 800, why did you not buy DDR2 667?

They might be useless atm, but people are getting ready for the games that are coming out this year.
Just because you don't have the money for these things, doesn't mean they are being put to waste.
FEAR, Oblivion, GRAW and RSV all easily need SLI 8800GTXs for 2560x1600.
People also do a lot of rendering/video editing with their quadcores.

They can afford it, and they can spend their money anyway they want to as long as its within the law. They also wont have to bother with upgrading for a long, long time.

Hehe yea if I could make my pc again I probably would go down to the E6300 and DDR2-667 with a 8800GTS. Was banking on a new job to produce the funds for a 8800GTX or better asap to put this E6600 to use. Still though this 7900GS is more powerful than I was expecting, but when DX10 games come out its over for 1600x1200.
Oh yea and I wonder how many ppl with SLI 8800GTXs actually have the $1500 display they should have to put them to good use. I'd love to see someone on a 17" CRT with a 8800GTX lol.

That would be retarded. A 17" CRT could do like 1280x960 @ 60hz probably, a 7600GT is plenty for that. That was my whole point, why spend $1000+ on gfx cards when your monitor can't even make use of them. And no I'm not jealous, I have a 22" CRT that can do 2048x1536 @ 85hz and a 43" plasma TV in my room. Ah the days when I had money, good thing is displays never really go obsolete, at least not nearly as fast as pc parts.

bc there was a great deal on that brand and rebate for it too that made it cheaper than 2 gigs of the slowest ddr2 ram, i was getting whatever was cheapest, turns out some sale made the fastest ram out the best deal for 2 gigs. but guess what, theres no deal making a 4 core processor cheaper than 100 bucks.

as for money, i could have bought a quad core and sli 8800's but i didnt, something i dont want to spend my money on. so my money will sit for years and years

well buying the best parts is nice but one dont need that much cause most of the games today dont support quad and dont need 2 8800's GPu...But they can last for another 10 years and dont need to worry about upgrading the parts again...but but but by thats time i think even better parts will be out...like 6 cores or even 8 cores...and the graphics card will be like 10800GTX something like that u know wat i mean...

Well I don't know why everyone does it.. But I know why I did.. and why I won't do it again... I finally had enough money to buy the best so I did.. Then I found out that the performance increase was not very large at all... At least not with the extreme Edition CPU (Core 2 x6800). The 8800 GTX is actually rather nice... But the price is just way too high still... The performance is great but reasonable performance can be had with the 8800 GTS for a much better price... Nearly 70% of the performance for like 60% of the price... and with the CPU... I could have saved almost 40% for a 10% decrease in performance...
