A common opinion is that the N64's best games are only made by Nintendo (incl. HAL Labs) and Rare. But personally, I think that's a bit of an unfair assessment. Sure, it lacked third party support compared to PlayStation, but there were still good games regardless.

To that end, I ask, which are the best N64 games NOT made by Nintendo and/or Rare?

My choices:

Gauntlet Legends (Midway)

Star Wars: Rogue Squadron (Lucasarts/Factor 5)

The N64 was my main hub for (non-PC) Star Wars games and wrestling games back when I was into watching it like everyone else:

  • Rogue Squadron
  • Episode I: Racer
  • Shadows of the Empire
  • WWF Attitude
  • WWF No Mercy

  1. Winback: Covert Operations
  2. Forsaken 64 (multiplayer)
  3. Turok: Dinosaur Hunter
  4. Sin & Punishment
  5. Mischief Makers

Not by order of appeal. I just felt like enumerating them.

The wrestling games that AKI made for it.

To this day the N64 is fondly remembered for three things: the great games that Nintendo produced, the great games that Rare produced, and those amazing wrestling games like WCW Revenge and WWF No Mercy which have still not been topped to this day.

Extreme G. I'm hoping Night Dive re-releases those games once they finish up the Turok remasters.

Rayman 2: The Great Escape

Yeah, TWINE on the 64 is still a good game, legacy of Goldeneye be damned (which was a thing that cursed future Bond games no matter how good they were).

Rayman 2, I'm still playing, but man, what I've played of it is pretty much a Rare quality platformer.

I'm confuse. What do you mean by Goldeneye was a cursed for other future Bond games?

In that, no matter how good post-GE 64 games were (TWINE 64, Nightfire consoles, Everything or Nothing, GE 2010), they were seen as never living up to what Goldeneye did (I've even read a few comments calling every post-GE Bond game straight up bad cashins of Goldeneye). It's sad too because quite a few Bond games were still good-great.

Anyone calling those games cashins of Goldeneye are pretty stupid. They are great games too. But I'm on the side that prefers Goldeneye. I play that game almost every year.

Oh I see. It all makes sense now, Goldeneye: Rogue Agent on GC was trying to be somebody that isn't and so just put the name, Goldeneye and hope everyone flocks to that game but that didn't work. Wii Goldeneye didn't live up to what we hope it would and yeah, I can see why other Bond games failed miserably after Goldeneye N64 and I can understand why, Goldeneye N64 was a hell lot fun Bond game but however, I still say Tomorrow Never Dies on PS1 was also good as well and it's also my second favorite Bond game as well.
