Matt Maiocco of the Press Democrat has reported that safety Michael Lewis has also signed with the team. He also reports that the 49ers are closing in on Ravens free-agent nose tackle Aubrayo Franklin. Matt's updated blog can be found here.
This morning, Thomas Sorrell, a writer for RealFootball365, was the first to report that a deal was ready for Clements. Clements and Lewis spent the entire day at the 49ers facility in Santa Clara.

This sucks! Yeah we had a lot of cap money but did the niners really have to pay $80 million?!! Ugh, so much for our nice salary cap, this reminds me of the whole Zito fiasco that the Giants committed. Hopefully we still can  get lucky and sign Adalius Thomas or at least sign a couple of ok players from FA and of course the draft.

The money Clements got was insane now I hope Samuel doesn't see this or else hes gone.  For as good as I think Clements is... hes not Baily or Law but hey they have the money I guess.  Good solid signings by the Niners.

Clements in actuality got a 6 year, 43.5 million dollar contract.

The last 2 years pay him 36.5 million. He will NOT see those years. In the first 6 years he makes 7.25 per, along with a 22 mil bonus.

Just remember, the 80 mil is not the real contract.

Im dissapointed we didnt sign adalius thomas. Maybe joey porter will be a niner? Hes had a more consistent career but he had a down year last year.

I cant say much about michael lewis. He had a down year as well but he was a probowler a few years ago. I need to see financial details.

I think Garcia is throwing his career away if he goes to the raiders.  They need to start from the ground up and draft a QB.

The Raiders should trade Randy Moss To the Patriots for Matt Cassell and a 6th round draft pick.  Then they would still get a young QB and could draft Calvin Johnson.

Yeah, but its a lot of funny money in years 7 and 8. He will earn 36.5 million in the last 2 years. He will never see that much $. He earns about 7.25 per for the first 6 years.

I like him alot, and think he's a pretty solid safety. He struggled in coverage last year, but he's a hard hitter and a really good tackler. I think the Niners got one hell of a safety, considering he's still kinda young and he's been a pro bowl safety before. If he fixes some of his coverage problems next year this could be a great signing.

Silly money, I wouldn't class Clements as a top 5 cornerback yet he demands number 1 money. Hopefully he won't see out the last two years of his contract or else the 49ers will be financially crippled.

I agree 100 percent hes not a top 5 cornerback in this league hes not Champ Baily and hes not Ty Law.  Asante Samuel is going to go crazy after seeing this but I know and we all know hes not as good as Clements he just had a great year but theres still so much for him to learn yet and besides the only reason hes our number one is because we have no elite corner.

Kind of feels like what the Redskins did last year just sign the best players available and that didnt exactly translate to well.

Yup its backloaded as will be Adalius Thomas' contract with the Patriots. Still 7.25 is pretty good.

I agree, Clements is not a top 5 corner (top 10 maybe) and was paid a little too much, but whats with you continuing to put Law in the same sentence as Bailey. Law is not a top 5 corner either :?

Just some of you are over reacting a bit with the whole Clements signing. If his contract is being backloaded, this will be a good signing by the 49ers.
