I guess more tech savvy members can answer this question, if the X1X is what it is at $500 in late 2017, what should we expect the PS5 to be in late 2018-late 2019 at the $399 price range? I think that price range makes sense.

And also, can the X1X last through the PS5's gen at those specs?

Thanks for all serious answers.

Desired Specs:

  • 7nm FinFET APU with 8-Core Ryzen CPU and a decent Vega GPU core. (8 to 10 FP32 Teraflop rating) + ARM Co-processor for Operating System and Background Processes.
  • 12GB/16GB of GDDR5X or GDDR6 memory (HBM2 is too expensive)
  • 4K Ultra Blu-Ray player
  • Backwards compatible with PlayStation 4

If we can get something with 3ghz or more that'd be great preferably i5 level.

I'd be perfectly ok with 2k games over 4k though that depends on how well adopted 4k is by say 2020-21.

12gb ram is acceptable.

*coughcoughportablelikeswitchcoughcough*

And yes bc with ps4 somehow.

It won't release until the summer of 2020, they need reliable 7nm process.

PS5

CPU- Ryzen 6 core/12 treads@3.3ghz

GPU - Vega+/Navi core@ 1500mhz, 16GB HBM2(quad stack > TB/S bandwidth) 12-15 TFlops

4K Blu-Ray, 2TB HDD

only in late 2019 to 2020 will these specs be achievable in a $500 or cheaper box.

There's are two 7 nm FinFET GCNs, Vega variant and Navi variant.

Sony not going to release a next gen console that costs 500 bones on it's own.

Based on history, the PS5 is releasing in 2020-2021 at $399.

2019 is pushing it, but possible, but they won't go over $399 USD.

They aren't going to short change the PS4's (number one seller this gen) life in the meantime.

@getslaidalot: imagine the best PC you could build in 2017, that will be your PS5. Over it's time however it would perform better thanks to LOW level API and faster memory. To answer your question much better than the X1X.

I am willing to bet serious money that we won't get ps5 before 2019 at the earliest... anything else would be such a huge slap in the face to the pro buyers... as a pc gamer I would love for it to be out before though!!

Pushing it early, leads to 7 nm FinFET Vega. Pushing it later, leads to NAVI.

There' are two waves for 14 nm/16 nm FinFET GPUs, hence there could be two waves for 7 nm FinFET GPUs.

Vega still has fix warp thread size like GCN 1.0.

AMD has patents for variable warp thread size.

This is the most likely answer.

Its just not feasible for Sony to meet their price target if they release before 2020

If its 2018 , not much.

If its 2020 as most predict , a big difference.

If it releases in 2018, then the same as the OneX, so that's not going to happen. I don't really see a reason for them to release a new console in the next 3 years. They've seen the sales of the PS Pro (around 20% of total), so I don't think they think OneX will have a big impact on the current state of the market. So why put all that money in R&D when it's too early?

No way the PS5 is coming in 2018. We would have heard something about it by now.

2019 what Id like to see

This should chew up and spit out 4K games at 60fps no problem

    • 8 cores @2.8GHZ - about a 25% boost in speed over the One X)
    • 24 GBs latest system memory - might sound excessive, but its a system thats suppose to last until 2025/26, so this is future proofing it.
    • 9 Tflop GPU - comfortably 50% stronger then the One X GPU)
    • 2 TB HDD - with 4K games settling around the 100GB number, this is a no brainer)

$399 for disc-less digital only system

$449 for 4K quad-layer bluray disc system

Truth be told, I'm not asking for anything radical as far as power-rise specs, I just want to see something innovating coming from PS5, gamers theses days are just asking too much for a powerful console when it shouldn't be competing against PC at all.

At this giving point, I'm cool with the PS4 as it is and I personally never cared how powerful it is, it's the exclusive games that won it for my liking.

@tormentos: Personally, I don't think 2020 is too long. That's the same timeframe between the PS3 launch and the PS4. The difference this time is that there's an intermediary PS4 Pro, whereas before there was no stronger PS3 available. Naturally there was a strong, pent up desire for a new console in 2013, but it should be less of an issue this time.

I feel like smartphones have led us into thinking we have to regularly update our electronics. Consoles, though, work best when they wait a long time between releases. That makes the improvements more defined and the differences between gens more pronounced.

As many have stated, price becomes the issue. MS didn't do a bad job with the X1X specs/power. $500 is value for whats in the console. I think the question becomes at what point can the X1X be sold at break-even for $399? If that's end of 2018, then we are waiting a while for a stronger PS5 at a price that Sony has had success with this generation.

Hopefully it won't be mandatory 4K. That's my only fear. If it runs on 1080p tv's then I'm fine with whatever specs it has.

From a business perspective, that wouldnt make sense given that they JUST released the Pro less than a year ago.

It would anger gamers AND retailers.

Don't know how angry gamers would be,most gamers i am sure are happy getting a new phone every 2 years without problems and those cost way more than an XBO X and Pro at least the top models do.

But i don't think 2018 is a release candidate date for a new PS4 or PS5,i think sony was doing kind of an experiment with the Pro,seeing how gamers would react to more power but at the same time having a cheaper console that could play the same exact games, probably push by surveys showing some people got a PS4 for power.

I think like on PC most console gamers would not go for the strongest hardware and would go for a cheaper units if available most of the time 20% from 100 mean 1 out of every 5 chose a Pro and the gap in price was $100 on launch and $150 by holidays.

I knew you would use the cell phone example but that isnt relevant to the console market unless Sony and Microsoft adopt that model.

The mobile market thrives with this model because companies have a partnership with the retailer, the phone maker, and service provider. There are price subsidies at almost every level that benefit each party in one form or another.

Generic example: New Iphone costs $700. The user almost NEVER pays that. (Otherwise they would not upgrade every 2 years)

The carrier buys phones in bulk..........at a steep discount (old model) or lower price than retail (new model)

With the old model, the carrier could charge you a down payment in exchange for a 2 year contract.......with the cost of phone split of life of contract as a hidden cost.

With the new model, same applies except you know how much you are paying (ie $25 a month for phone)

The 3 parties (phone maker, retailer, carrier) came up with the new model because users wanted to upgrade more often, and this is how they capitalize on that.

Consoles are not subsidized (except rarely by the console maker (being sold at a loss).

The end user pays ALL $400-$500

Until Sony and MS start subsidizing the cost of the iterations, the cell phone model will not work.

There was talk of MS doing it a few years ago with the launch of Xbox One but that was quickly dropped because they couldnt agree with partners in the US (at a time when Time Warner was trying to merge).

They had a deal with Sky in the UK i think but the lack of a US deal killed.

Not sure if it would work, but its out there.

Since Sony said PS5 will be a leap forward Sony isn't dumb enough to drop something in 2018-2019 that would be compatible to slightly better specs than X1X. They'd price themselves out, a 2019 announcement with a 2020 release sounds perfectly fine. But to be significantly more powerful and provide a nice able to be seen by people jump in visuals it's gonna be a $500+ console. Unless they come up with a custom build that is cheaper, then risking PS3 dev issues all over again

Way too early to discuss next gen. The current gen consoles work just fine and perform well. Anything announced before late 2019 will probably be a half assed cash grab similar to the crap they pulled this gen. I'm good on spending $4-500 until I see true innovation and advancement like the PS2-PS3 jump.

Will not matter if the pro makes up 10% of the install base for few will care. I have one and would be glad to ditch it for a PS5 next year if sony gives it a proper cpu upgrade. I can not rap my head around how shitty the CPU is in the pro and X Box X

Nice specs and all but why wait years for that when in a few short months the X1X will be available? If you own an X1X, it would be hard to get excited about those specs years down the road.

I don't know about specs but here is my request. Full PS4 BC, and 4K output with HDR support. That's it. Pro almost does that with 4K being iffy at times.

hard to say. i dont think they will be prepared to take a big loss on each box sold so 399 is probably going to be around the X1X spec overall.

they may get a couple of wins. they could have more vega based tech available to them which may give their GPU a bit more of a bang. they could probably get 16GB of GDDR5 ram in there too (i think HBM would be out of the question).

as for ryzen: i dont think it would offer enough of a benefit in a console environment to warrant the cost. a full fat desktop processor is a bit overkill for a console. to their credit i think MS have the right idea on the CPU front. try to get more bang per clock by reducing the burden on it. get overheads down n such like. there isnt much point in going for more cores either.

$399 is awfully tight though.

To achieve true next generation gaming a console would need a minimum of 12Tflops.

I don't think they'd have to push to hard. With Sonys current lead all they would have to do is match 1x tflops using newer tech, Ryzen+vega 6 tflop gpu would punch harder than the 1x.

I seriously doubt that they could release the PS5 within the next year or two and have it a worthwhile upgrade at a console friendly price.
