A regular one, 4k hdr 55''. Bought it a few years ago on Amazon sale. Lightweight, quite good image for a cheap price. They usually go 300-400USD on Amazon. Good for Netflix and youtube.
How much did you pay for your TCL? I use to own a 49in S405 and while I thought it was great for the price of $270 it broke on me just a month after its 1 year warranty expired. TCL has great prices for what they offer on paper but its a lottery when it comes to their build quality.
Do you plan on getting a new TV with a 120hz panel or do you mostly game on your monitor and it has a high refresh rate? I would since you have a RTX 3090, you'd be doing a great injustice to only be playing games at 60fps on that card when it is shown that it can play most games at above 60fps at 4k. Although it is probably best if you wait at least another year for a new TV since HDMI 2.1 with 4k 120hz is still only on TVs that cost at least $800. A year from now you should be able to get something like a Samsung Q70T 55" refurbished for like $500-$600 or a brand new 2021 or 2022 Q60 Model should have 4k 120hz for around that price.
I bought mine 2 years ago for 380USD on Amazon and it has been very great so far. It survived one crazy ex-girlfriend who liked to break my stuff in anger and 2000-mile relocation lol TCL usually have great reviews, sorry to hear your broke down so fast.
When it comes down to using TV as a monitor…oh boy…it’s a LONG topic and I made tons of research and here’s my 2 cents of thought:
When you are picking a TV or monitor there are 4 factors that you must take into account: refresh rate, size, image quality and response time.
It’s super HARD to find ALL those factors in one package. Usually, the relation between those is following:
Bigger size and images quality -> lower refresh rate and response time
High refresh rate and response time -> low image quality and size
High refresh rate, size, image quality in one -> HUGE PREMIUM PRICE = 1200USD +
1. Well, 4k resolution requires big size screen: 42 inches and plus, otherwise it’s pointless. Just get 32‘’ 1440p, you will not see any difference from your sitting distance and pay way less.
2. If you want high image quality, big size and high refresh rate you MUST be careful. Many tvs that claim 120 Hz are actually 120Hrz at lower resolutions, and, in reality, are 4k 60 fps.
3. The only tvs that can do 4k and 120fps are expensives ones QLED and OLED. QLED is just a fancy LED tv that emulates OLED quality with software. OLEDs have the best image quality period, that is, the best contrast of black, which, according to some SW warriors, is like the 2nd coming of Lord Jesus.
BUT…OLED suck at static picture and WILL burn out in 3 months. So, OLED is not option for a PC monitor and internet browsing, as I am not that disciplined and careful and leave my PC in desktop screen for hours. Even static smart TV interface will leave burnout marks.
4. So, QLED tv it is then, right? No unfortunately. Both QLED or OLED, the best on the market, in gaming mode, still have response time of 20ms vs PC monitor’s 3ms. So, all the fluidity advantage you get with 120fps you lose it because of higher response time.
So, unfortunately, TVs are for CONSOLES, and monitors are still great for PCs.
But, a few years ago, there was no monitor in existence that could have all 3 factors in one: image quality, big size and high refresh rate. 1-2 years ago there was only one choice: 42 inches, 4k and 60 fps and they cost a fortune.
I got mine LG 42.5in 4K UHD 2 years ago for 800USD. It’s more a designer autocad-style monitor. It was not even HDR, but it was 12-bit color. Nowadays, you can buy an HDR version of it:
https://www.amazon.ca/LG-43UN700-B-Display-Type-C-Inputs/dp/B0821WWXV6/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&qid=1608912214&refinements=p_n_size_browse-bin%3A7328482011&rnid=7328474011&s=pc&sr=1-2
144+ Hz monitors can only do 8-bit colors, therefore their image quality is way worse than 60 fps montors or Tvs. Plus the size factor, a few years ago, 144Hrz monitors could not go over 32 inches if it’s not stretched super-wide and curved. Myself, I don’t like them curved or stretched. I liked them just TV-size, ultra-wide, 16:9 ratio.
So, I had not choice but go with 42in 4K UHD, as there were no other options on the market back then.
But next year, I will get a good QLED 42 - inch monitor, 120 Hz, HDR, and all that stuff. Something like this:
https://www.amazon.ca/Acer-CG437K-Pbmiiippuzx-Black-Monitor/dp/B07Z1212CQ/ref=sr_1_6?dchild=1&keywords=120Hz&qid=1608912724&refinements=p_n_size_browse-bin%3A7328482011&rnid=7328474011&s=pc&sr=1-6
But it’s price is astronomical rtn. It cost like an OLED tv, some 1500USD for 43 inches.
