Rumor: new Motorstorm title being considered by Sony for PS5

"Sony Interactive Entertainment might be considering to revive the off-road racing franchise with a MotorStorm reboot for PlayStation 5.

Taking to Twitter a couple of days back, leaker Ooops Leaks, who accurately leaked the delay of STALKER 2: Heart of Chernobyl, claimed that Sony has been lately discussing a MotorStorm reboot to serve as an arcade racing counterweight to its racing simulation Gran Turismo franchise.

MotorStorm received five installments before going on a hiatus nearly a decade ago. MotorStorm: RC was the last to release back in 2012 after which Sony closed down developer Evolution Studios in 2016 while retaining full ownership of the franchise. The entire PlayStation 4 generation hence missed out on any MotorStorm game, a decision which worked against Sony since the talented staff of Evolution Studios was picked up by Codemasters for its Dirt and F1 franchises.

MotorStorm: Pacific Rift, the second installment to release in 2008, is considered to be the best entry in the franchise. MotorStorm: Apocalypse, the fourth entry, took a serious hit due to its timing. The game had to be delayed due to the 2011 Japan earthquake and eventually cancelled for the region.

It remains to be confirmed why Sony chose to shutter Evolution Studios despite the success and fan-following of its MotorStorm games. Presently though, if rumors about a MotorStorm reboot are indeed true, fans will be happy to once again sit behind their off-road vehicles and that too on the new PlayStation 5 hardware."

Visually these games showed what the PS3 was capable of.

I think it would be a great idea to revive it. I prefer the arcade race genre over the sim racer.

I hope this is true as the series was great, but they don't have Evolution to make it. A lot up in the air about how well this will turn out, if it happens at all.

It is a shame they shuttered Evolution but it's worth noting that a higher up at Evolution during the Motorstorm days, Matt Southern, recently joined Firesprite, a Sony first party studio. Lucid Games was rumored to be making the new Twisted Metal game and then it's now rumored that development of TM has been moved to Firesprite after Matt Southern joined the Firesprite team.

I would prefer he get the opportunity to work on another Motorstorm, rather than Twisted Metal, though.

lol I actually remember that hype...sad i've been here that long. The cows were hyping motor storm so bad back then, to showcase the power of teh cell. It did look decent, but too bad it sucked.

The visuals/physics are great in the first Motorstorm, even better than some of the sequels. It just didn't have enough tracks

I didn't like the physics all that much, and end of the day I found dirt 1 to be the much better game. No doubt though motorstorm looked great back then.

Pacific rift was one of my fav racing games of the PS3 era. Great news if it happens I think Sony need a more arcade Racer on the platform.

Hope this is one of those rumors that turns out to be true, though even if case I got lots of questions like who is doing it since Evolution is no more (they got absorbed by Codemasters I believe), so will they outsource it or move the IP to a different internal studio. At very least I'd be happy seeing Blue Point doing a remastered collection and take a lot of liberties in making Apocalypse a better game overall.

On thing I'd love to see though is a proper cockpit view rather than a hood or bumper cam, like the original CGI trailer the first game had. Also camera behavior is important. I'd love to see cockpit view options with a traveling camera when checking sides or rear, to make it feel more immersive, rather than a snappy/cut like many games do. Forza does is a snappy cam and only way to get that head tracking camera effect is to press camera analog forward and rotate around side. Apocalypse too did this weird thing when playing in first person when you camera check the sides the camera switches to an exterior shot which always threw me off in a major way.

I can't say that I am moved to excitement over this rumor.

Never did play Motorstorm, it just never really piqued my interest enough. Pretty much indifferent right now to this rumour.

I like the series back on PS3. I guess the success of Forza Horizon got their interest.

I rather have the Twisted Metal game. I know Motorstorm wasn't a traditional racer, but I want a car combat title that doesn't have the words Destruction and AllStars in it

I feel that Dirt 5 has some elements from Motorstorm, it's made by the same team afterall.

It's way less over the top and way more grounded though. Still a solid off road racing game :)

If Sony brings back Motorstorm and Resistance this gen, Sony won.

What will they win, the mediocre games of the gen revival award? Both games are mediocre, at best. No one cared about that crappy racer and half-assed shooter the first 2 or 3 times.

Cod is apparently on ps5 until 2024 so it gives them time to get to work on resistance whether its a remake or 4.

The first game is excellent, was replaying it just last year.

Bend studios proposed to make a Resistance game, it would be perfect because Insomniac is busy building half a dozen games, and because Bend already made a fantastic Resistance game before.

as compared to...what? Halo and Gears of War have not changed since the 360. We have no idea what Fable or Perfect Dark will look like yet. Sea of Thieves, Quantum Break, State of Decay, Super Lucky's Tale, Recore were all mixed/average games. The only thing Xbox really has as far as consistency goes is Forza Motorsport and Forza Horizon.

They're both abandoned garbage for a reason. Stop. Be realistic, or not. Up to you, but those games are both ass and even Sony knew it.
