Hardware developers at Sony submit that after months of testing, they claim that parallel analog sticks are the recipe for success. In an interview with IGN at TGS, Mark Cerny of the Sony design team said We made and tested a ridiculously broad style of controllers. He continued, and we would actually have people play games with them. The final PS4 controller design which at its core is similar to the PS3s was actually not set in stone until the final stages of development.

The design team even went as far as to have video game developers test several different controller prototypes for feedback. Mark Cerny explains:

We sent out prototypes to major FPS creators. We looked at the top-selling titles, if they were people we could talk to, we began sending over a stream of controllers. And we would ask them things like concavity or convexity, or trigger pressure, or trigger location, or accuracy, or the like.

That doesn't say a single thing about symmetrical analog sticks.

EDIT: The IGN article does and they barely quoted the actual bit about the sticks for some reason:

We made and tested a ridiculously broad style of controllers, Cerny said, and we would actually have people play games with them. And the current controller design came out of that. We did indeed conclude that the two joysticks on the same level works perfectly well. That did come out of our testing.

It's more like it's a signature branding of their system that's recognizable, so they'll keep it that way.

On the flip side I doubt Microsoft ever goes for that design on their own controller for the same reason.

well, to be honest the PS3 had symmetrical analogs but that didn't stop me from liking the Xbox 360's controller better, better triggers, better vibration, shorter analogs with concave tips, made for a much better controller IMO as far as the DS4 goes glad to hear the triggers are sturdy, it looks much improved upon, don't care for the idea of touch screen thing though, just because I fear it'll be harder to emulate those games 20 years down the road

When I grip a controller, with my Index and Middle fingers on the 4 Shoulder Buttons, I find my thumbs turn inward more toward where the parallel thumbsticks would be.

If I'm just holding the arms of the contoller and leaving my other fingers off the shoulder buttons, my thumbs would be where the WiiU controller's are.

I can't grip a PS4 controller to see if it's the same or not, but I think that setup will make accessing all the shoudler buttons easier to be 100% honest.

-I'm holding a 360 controller BTW as I do this. I find using the two Left shoulder buttons on the 360 is more difficult than the Right Shoulder buttons, and I assume it's because I have to keep my left thumb higher up than my right thumb.

Try it if you don't believe me. (Playing GTA5 on 360 BTW)

I think Sony's new controller makes it more comfortable to use all the shoudler buttons with the Twin Analog sticks parallel and lower on the pad.

Just my opinion of course. I doubt any Lemmings will agree with me. lol

EDIT - same thing with an old dual shock and a Gamecube controller - when you extend your Index and Middle Fingers to the shoulder buttons, your thumbs natually turn inward and lower - exactly where the Analog sticks rest on the DS4. That setup makes using the shoulder buttons more comfortable.

At least it does with my hands anyway.

No they are not, asymmetrical sticks are awful for fighting games and platformers where you need the d-pad beacause the d-pad is not on the same plane as the face buttons.

Yeah because it's so hard to.. you know hold one hand on the left analog stick and press a face button. Yeah,  they're so far apart.  Not to mention most games use both analog sticks and the shoulder /trigger buttons during gameplay. Face buttons are mostly for reloading and jumping. Symmetrical sticks accommodate more genres.

I always get a kick out of this argument. Shows how delusional 360 fanboys are. The reason the 360 controller is so highly acclaimed isn't because of the placement of its sticks, it's because of the height, texture, and distance of the sticks. Those stick characteristics are something DS controllers have lacked until now with the DS4. Asymmetrical sticks has nothing to do with the 360 pads success. Look at other devices that use symmetrical sticks, are they wrong to use this design as well lemmings?

The funny thing is hardly any games are played with just the left analog and the face buttons. If you use the left analog, 90 percent of the time you're going to be using the right analog and the shoulder/triggers. However, moving the d pad down and replacing it with the analog completely cripples a controller for fighters and makes other genres awkward to play. Why not make a controller that's balanced. Lems know no better, I'd look past them.

Well you asked for proof and I provided earlier, you failed to see it before. Since symmetrical sticks are standard with other devices, we can conclude that asymmetrical sticks are no reason for 360 pads acclaim. It's pretty obvious the other factors are.Â
