Were the PS5 faceplates a genius idea by Sony?

Damn, I'm really digging the black. Almost feels like this should've been the default color. I think this is a better idea than selling systems in different colors. Don't you agree, SW? Which color would you like for your system(s)?

You wouldn't need them if the console didn't look like trash to begin with. And no, its incredibly overpriced for what you're getting. Sony is ridiculous sometimes.

If genius means "forcing" you to spend more money by limiting your color options to the hideous white console and banning third party options then yes.

I still prefer the more rounded edges of the Darkplates 2.0, not to mention it actually runs cooler and quieter.

Be much cheaper just to buy can of Montana Gold and there are more options there.

I would have considered them genius if there were faceplates with some of their properties on them. But they are just plain and boring. Give me a Spider-man or TLoU faceplate and I'll be interested. Really, though, this stuff is kind of gimmicky and I don't think about it much. Give me some awesome games.

Nah, I certainly wouldn’t call it genius myself. They seem highly overpriced to me especially just to simply change the colour of the console. If they come out with ones with custom artwork then that would motivate me much more, depending on how much they charge of course.

I think some RGB's from the PC playbook on a faceplate would have been genius. That way you could actually change the color and pattern on the fly depending on your mood. Seems kind of overpriced for a static colored peice of plastic. At the very least, they aren't locking DLC behind it, so I guess gamers can at least thank their lucky stars for that.

Gameboy Micro did it better.

They should have just partnered up with third-party vendors, I don't think design is one of Sony's strong points, at least not with the PS5. Console is fugly. And HUGE!

Besides, it still doesn't change my opinion that the PS5's ugly-ass design looks like a wifi router that belongs on the starship Enterprise.

I like it black or white. The PS5 is something you see in the year 3000. The design is futuristic and will age like fine wine.

@SolidGame_basic: I was surprised Sony didn't just take a design cue from the PS4. That design wasn't bad and it was atheistically pleasing. Those sharp angles jutting over that round design on the PS5 is jarring.

I just got mine today. The black ones. I’m kinda wondering how it would look to mix and match different colors. I like mixing it up with the Switch joycon colors, and maybe these faceplates would look neat too. 🤔

oh my god an yall are supporting Sony for something this overpriced and gimmicky🤦‍♂️PS6 will be pink, and if you want it in another color, you must buy a limited edition version going for $200 more. This is where we're heading.

To be fair, console accesoires have always been expensive. 70 dollar controllers, faceplates, online subscriptions, expensive games... It's clear the cheap entry price for console gaming is lifted up elsewhere.

I'll probably get the red plates £55 is a bit steep but they look good.

I wouldn't say genius. it's an old idea brought up again. but its a nice option to have. I have a slight preference for Dbrands modified plates though (they take the sharp corner off).

I cant really decide what colours i would go for. I'm leaning towards Grey like the PS1 (with a coloured PS logo rather than the standard cut out).

70dollar controller is a goddamn steal vs those plates

You know how many times I wanted a special addition console but didn't want to buy a new console. Now I can get it with out buying a new console. Sick of people calling things gimmicks when it's not forced on them to buy them.
