Tears of the Kingdom, It has some things i like in it more than in breath of the wild but also a lot that were better on the previous game, overall i think it is not as good.
TotK
Dead Space Remake. Shocking nobody here has mentioned it. Underrated 2023 game and probably overshadowed by Resident Evil 4 Remake.
A slightly updated version of a game that already exists and was already good, sold for new game price. I'd find it more shocking if it got many mentions.

Dead space is 1:1 remake. RE4 is more of proper remake. overhaul of entire gameplay mechanic. and improved alot.
Resident Evil 4 Remake. RE4 is still one of the greatest games of all time. Nothing else released this year comes close. But since it's a remake, it's only fair to hand out GOTY awards to newer 2023 games rather than a remake of a 2005 game.
Its actually with the remake that i've noticed how flawed the game was. For all these years, i always thought that RE4 was so far ahead of all the games in the same genre that comparing them isn't even fair, but not anymore. And while there were some things that were better in the original when compared to the remake, since the original came out during the "every game must have qte's", its just so bad, the remake is better for this reason alone.
RE4 didn't come out during the "every game must have QTEs" era... RE4 is the game that popularized QTEs. It's one of the most influential games of the last two decades. It's a genre-defining game that virtually every third‑person action game has been trying to imitate ever since, from its over-the-shoulder camera and set piece design to its weapon upgrades and QTE mechanics. While QTEs have since gained a negative rep, RE4 is one of the few games where it works in its favour due to being a horror game where it adds to the tension. The combination of great action and tense atmosphere in RE4 is unparalleled to this day.
BG3 wins for me, but TOTK was very close.
I'm also enjoying the hell out of Alan Wake 2, although I'm finding some of the combat to be chore. It's definitely interesting.
Like a Dragon: Gaiden would probably be in my top five, and maybe Super Mario Wonder or 40K Rogue Trader?
I'd say FF16 misses out because of how uneven the story and combat were, and the sidequests sucked. Similarly, Diablo 4 wasn't even slightly fun.
Special mention to RE4, which was really well done but ultimately less original or creative than the other games I mentioned
@Jag85: I was thinking the same as you until BG3.
RE4R shits on every single 2023 game (handedly) except for BG3.
Games like Alan Wake 2, Spiderman 2, Zelda:TOTK just aren't close to RE4R quality.
Zelda ToTK, thinking about it this might be the only game I've played this year that's a 2023 game 😅
I've enjoyed going back and playing older games over the crap that's been released recently. Baldur's Gate 3 is okay, but I think Larian did better with Divinity: OS2.
I've had more fun going back and playing older games such as:
The best two games I played this year were no man's sky and metal gear rising revengence.
I look forward to playing 2023 in 2025... Lol
Strange. But why? You missed a lot of gems this year.
Is it due to age, family, or money?
Honestly, probably the Ghost Trick remaster. I never played the original, and I'm having a good time chilling while playing it on my Steam Deck.

I am not seeing an asscreed on there. Can you explain yourself?

Bought that game, but haven't played it yet. How does it compare to other visual novels you've played?

It's more of a puzzle game than a visual novel. The dialogue is very Ace Attorney 1-3, but you have a much more active role by manipulating objects. It's pretty fun, imo.
It might not show up on many GOTY lists, perhaps because of its mediocre predecessor (and a few baffling reviews), but history will remember that one of the best games of 2023 was Octopath Traveler 2

Well said, easily one of my favorite JRPGs ever.

I must investigate this game!
it's coming to Xbox next year.. I suspect it will come to GamePass (the original did).

No chance it will be day one on Game Pass though.

It’s been on sale for $30 lately.
Hogwarts was a nice surprise. The success of the game despite it being blackballed by the gaming media is fun to see as well. It goes to show you how little influence they actually have.

Have had that game since launch, just haven’t gotten around to it yet. The first couple hours seemed cool.. what makes it really good? The world building?
Crazy to think that some might be naming anything but BG3. Its so much superior to everything else its like another dimension.
@hardwenzen: Everything except RE4 Remake that is. RE4R is definitely on par with Baldur's Gate 3.
Though to not give the same game GOTY twice, its obvious BG3 is the clear choice.
The third best game of 2023 is so far behind the first two.
1. Resident Evil 4 remake
2. Spider-Man 2
3. Final Fantasy 16
4. Baldurs Gate 3
5. Jedi Survivor
6. Armored Core 6
7. Street Fighter 6
8. Diablo 4
9. Tears of the Kingdom
10. Mortal Kombat 11
I haven't played Mario Wonder yet but I will get to it shortly. I spent a ridiculous amount of time gaming this year. It was one of the best years in gaming honestly.

I wouldn't say so. RE4R is good, but its nowhere near 10/10 good. The level design, outside of the village and the castle to a lesser extent, is mid at best.
@hardwenzen:RE4R is almost as close a 10 as you get.
I rate both BG3 and RE4R a 9.7/10.
its one of the top 5 best RPGs ever, but I wish it had a D2-styled levelling system.
100 levels (not a measly 12 levels), 1-5 stat points per level and 1 skill point per level. Be able to put at least 10-20 points per skill. I know Maxorad will say this breaks DnD rules but I don't care about DND. Work a way around it. Re-scale every enemy, skill and item in the game until works and is balanced.
I wish there was more levelling and "build choices" by picking skills and stats along the 200 hour journey.
its one of the top 5 best Action games ever and tbh I don't really have any particular flaws or wants. I don't think it is a 10/10 even if its combat mechanics and (yes) level design, replayability etc are 10s. I think for the last .3 it would need better story.
I almost never hand out a 10/10 . These two are quite clear 9.5+
No other game in 2023 deserves even a 9/10 in my opinion.
Armoured Core 6 and Lies of P are 8/10s.
Robocop, Alan Wake 2, Final Fantasy 16, Spiderman 2, Lords of the Fallen, Jedi Survivor, Zelda: TOTK are 7/10s
Starfield, Remnant II, and Cyberpunk 2.1 PL are all a 6/10.
Crazy to think that some might be naming anything but BG3. Its so much superior to everything else its like another dimension.
I enjoyed BG3 but you're wrong. For one I had to wait a week to finish the game because Act 3 was completely broken on PS5 until they released a patch to fix a game breaking bug. The game had more game breaking bugs then any major title this year. The lvl 12 cap is also dumb and unnecessary and some sub classes range from OP to useless.
Overall I enjoyed it, and it got me back into turn based RPG's again. However acting like it's game of the generation is hyperbole.
1. Tears of the Kingdom
2. Alan Wake 2
3. Resident Evil 4 Remake
4. Starfield
5. Pikmin 4
Honorable Mentions:
God of War Roguelite DLC

SF6 takes it clean for me. Had to drop games for a couple of months and still managed to clock about 700 hrs lol. Gonna be playing this one for years.
TotK in a distant 2nd, maybe RE4R for 3rd. Gets muddy after the top two spots, so many good games this year.

Damn, is that the most hours you put into a game ever?

lol nah. Even just SF series alone, I've put over double that into some of the other games.

Are you a top rank?!
Nah, top rank is Legend. Have to maintain top 500 standing in an ELO rating system. It's brutal, that shit is exclusively pro players lol. Not about to quit my day job. 😅
Making Master rank is relatively easy though.

Heh, maybe. Probably a tossup between Champ, Pikminmaniac, and myself. Don't know if you remember SonicMJ who used to post here long ago. He's also in our group, has both Honda and Chun Li in master rank.

Dead Space Remake is top tier. I only paid like £4.80 for it. Pssst... just play it via EA Play
