For me, one thing is if the game is free. I'm not talking about giveaways, but rather f2p, or simply if the game has no price, but is not exactly f2p. I know it's not fair of me, as there are probably some great free games out there. But I guess I'm not fair.

What about you guys? What makes you reject a game?

VR. I mean I don’t currently have a VR device so it’s kind of a given that I can’t play a VR game currently. However I have no interest in ever getting a VR device so those games are an automatic pass for me. Other then that everything else is pretty much fair game in varying degrees.

If it has the words "First Person Shooter" or "Online Only".

I have a zero-tolerance policy to those two.

Character designs in a game are ugly or unattractive.

Another is that the game is turn-based, whether a RPG or strategy game. Fire Emblem Engage will be my last turned-based RPG I will play.

Finally, games with excessive, graphic violence or profanity.

Live service games, online FPS, or anything with "pokemon" in the title.

TLOU, new God of War, and Uncharted. I think I played like 10 minutes of the ones available on PC and just went back to some other game. So boring.

For me it works for both movies and games, and a trailer is enough:

When i watch a period movie/game trailer (medieval, western, victorian, etc) with modern 'cool teenager' music i'm immediately not interested. When it comes to games Ubisoft and EA are experts at it.

Kingdom Hearts anything.

I just can't take a fantasy RPG with Disney characters seriously. Also, **** Disney.

'Movie game' starts and ends at Uncharted for me. Those other games have at least one type of game play element that doesn't suck. Uncharted sucks 100% of the time you are not watching cutscenes.

@zaryia: What are some of your favorite games? Just trying to get a reference. For what it's worth, some of these movie games have a lot of actual solid gameplay, like TLOU, especially the sequel. Uncharted, not so much, for sure.

I definitely ain't playing it if it has more cinematic cutscenes than gameplay. It's really not a choice either if the game forces me to put down the controller to watch it.

For me, it's the Souls games not having a narrative, whether it's cutscenes or in game like Half Life 2.

Outside of Elden Ring, I haven't played more than a couple of hours in any Souls game.

I bought Nioh 2 though so hopefully I enjoy that since it has an actual story

Unrealistic too depending on your character. Like Outlast. That guy you’re playing as could have made that adventure a lot easier with a well placed punch or kick, especially one on one with a guy no bigger than he is. There is just no good reason he couldn’t pick up a weapon too! NONE.

YES! GOD, I tried soooo hard to get into Outlast but the fact that I can't do anything to defend myself just makes it ridiculous. In any real setting, you could literally use anything as a weapon. If you flat out refuse to then well....you deserve what you get.

VR is a non starter at this point. Too expensive and no compelling content. Only for ultra tech enthusiasts or people with disposable incomes. The Helmet man... Gawd awful. Do not want to wear, ever.

Free to play is usually a non starter too. It's not that the games are bad, but they're chasing an unfulfilling model. These games are usually designed with long slow grinds when you're not paying up which is meh. I usually just skip them.

Game length is probably my newest, "meh"... That makes me not interested in a game. If I read that a game is a hundred hours long I clam up and tend to ignore it. Just don't want to he tethered to one game for that long anymore. Every once in a while maybe but not regularly.

I honestly don't think you understand the benefit of VR. Not trying to be mean lol. It's a completely different experience from regular gaming. If you have any friends that have one, check it out. Also, most VR systems are pretty affordable lol.

I've played it plenty. My nephew has VR. I've played a few different games that were OK little time wasters. It is admittedly fun to be IN another world, but the games themselves don't ever feel as developed or as responsive as the tips of my fingers. I said it in the other thread about VR... When I play it I think it's not ready yet. Perhaps this new generation of VR will refine the experience even more and developers can make deeper games.

I should be clear that I do "get" the excitement of entering another world of possibilities... VR is very immersive, but to the length that they've developed gameplay, it's glorified kinect... It works better than kinect for sure, but the gameplay isn't groundbreaking or even overly fun for more than a few minutes.

Now tack on a thousand dollar asking price... Ummm what? No thanks...at least, not for me at the moment.

In terms of stuff that, when i know a game has it, i just walk away:

  • Free to play: Nope not playing it. it's going to be utter garbage designed by an accountant.
  • Online competitive only. I'm a single player guy. I have no interest in playing online.
  • Jumpy/Scary: Nope. Not doing it. I'm a big wuss, i admit it. Grabbing the light off the corpse in HL Alyx is about my limit. I heard about Jeff before getting to that point and by then I knew I would be leaving the game there. Not happening. Not doing it. No way.
  • Streaming only (Thankfully this doesn't exist yet and may it forever be buried): Streaming games is awful. Nope. I don't care what it is....if it's only available on streaming services then I am not a potential customer.

150 hour+ SP game with tons of reading

(Stares at persona 5 on the shelf that I quit at palace 4)

Games with heavy hand holding, excessive cinematics, takes away control to much to tell a story (movie games)

VR, I'm not wearing that dumb thing on my face

My time to game is limited, I can't invest in these excessively long RPGs or these games that have more talking than gameplay. And I want to be comfortable while playing a game.

Sports games, for the most part. They're fun with a group but even then I'm usually terrible so not so much fun.

Japanese games. Not because I hate Japan or Japanese or anything, I just haven't really enjoyed a Japanese game since my N64 days. Also they tend to port games poorly in my experience.

Overly cinematic. I bought a PS4, big regret. All their famous games are boring as hell. Never again.

Soulsborne....soulslike....etc. I hate trial and error. My tastes have changed, I like to relax when I play games now. These games are not relaxing.

Not really. I miss out on some franchises that are near and dear to many people, but I don't feel like I miss out on much volume. Japan tends to trickle out the releases (at least major ones) relative to the rest of the world.

Trust me I wish I liked them, and I used to like them, but I keep trying and I just can't. I've played Dragon Quest X (or whatever was the last one), Final Fantasy, Vanquish, most of the soulsborne-type games, MGS 5, Death Stranding...
