They were both bad but the RRoD had a larger impact on me personally. My system broke the day Halo 3 released. Waiting to play my most anticipated game for the system while all my friends were playing it truly sucked so I ended up buying a second console which also ended up with the RRoD about a year later. I remember trying every trick listed on the internet to get it to work again, to no avail.

Sony still got people to begin to pay for their service after the outage took place, so I am not sure it was much of a stain on them.

RROD was and will forever be a bigger stain. The PSN outages didn't brick your hardware and although you couldn't play online, you could at least still turn your PS3 on and play offline. RROD made gamers either ship their console for a replacement that was likely to RROD again or buy a new console altogether if they were outside of the extended RROD warranty period.

MS not making faulty hardware anymore does not diminish the severity of the RROD issue. If that's the case then you can argue that the PSN outage wasn't that bad since Sony hasn't had an outage like that ever since.

YES! That happened to me as well. I was irate! And then it happened again when Halo Reach came out. I gave up after that. Really made it hard for me to buy an Xbox One this gen.

While I did buy an X1 this gen, it was not on release day like every other console I've owned since the Genesis.

How does an outage... even one that lasted that long.... compare at all to mass hardware failures? I had friends that went through 4 X360s! That's horrible.

There is no stain on anyone's legacy when things are good. People may bitch about a particular moment in time during that time and the moment things uptick, that moment is forgotten.

Heck with the XSX MS is touting the air flow design! I guarantee MS did some focus groups on the Xbox brand during this generation I bet they got a lot of negative feedback regarding hardware reliability....stemming from the 360

@tomalevine: nothing you say is reasonable. The 360 was so poorly designed that the xbone was over engineered to ensure zero overheating issues. Look at how comically large the original xbone was with an external psu.

The one x is the only machine ms has gotten somewhat right in a loooooong time.

Are you kidding me? Yes, the Sony hack was fucked up, especially since they didn't reveal what had happened until a week later. But, your PS3 wasn't broken. Microsoft rolled a defective product onto the market with the 360, and instead of recalling it, they put a band aid on the issue by constantly keeping shipping coffins in rotation. Only to give you back the same, new or refurbished soon-to-be dead console.

Peter Moore, for as successful as he made 360, actually stepped away from MS over this fiasco. It was not a thing to be taken lightly. I know you're mad as shit Xbox got walked over this gen, but if they were firing on all cylinders they'd sure as hell would be doing a lot better than they are now. Not especially sure why you're foaming at the mouth at why they got heat over this incident. Hell, MS needed to learn from this mistake.

What good does it do to stay salty at Sony over an Xbox ****-up... from last gen? I don't think it's Sony who's drunk here.

The 2011 PSN outage was definitely embarrasing and a big blow to Sony....I strongly feel games like Killzone 3 and SOCOM 4 suffered because of this. And of course Motorstorm Apocalypse with the Japanese earthquakes happening at the exact same time...it was just an unlucky year for the PS3.

The Xbox RRoD is kind of iconic though and something that will always be remembered and Microsoft will always be affiliated with it. So I choose RRoD.

While not a fanboy of any system or company, I do lean Xbox. That being said, the RROD is the reason I still won't buy any system at launch. I can't speak on the PSN outage as I never owned a PS3 so it didn't affect me.

The PSN outage was due to hackers straight-up gaining access to the private info of millions of people... So, that.

I owned a 360 Pro model which I bought in late 2008, and a late 2010 model that had the Kinect and a built-in wifi adapter. I never experienced the RRoD.

I also didn't subscribe to PSN until some point after the 2011 Outages, so those never affected me either.

For as much as these events happened, from my viewpoint it wasn't a big deal.
