Doom 3 raised the bar visually with excellent shadows, lighting and high rez textures.

Whereas Half Life 2 incorporated physics as a game play element (pretty cool for that time) and we all know how we love Portal. So in ways, HL2 can be called a spiritual predecessor to Portal while D3 to Prey, Fear and so on.
