I definitely agree with this. Art is something that's underrated, and I like games looking unique. Cuphead, Don't Starve, Zelda Breath of the Wild, Octopath Traveler, Knack, Okami, etc. Just beautiful games without going for a realistic look.
Overall, I think gameplay is the absolute most important. If I don't gel with the game itself, then even a pretty art style won't save it. Though I do wish more games would go for a more unique style that isn't just ultra realistic.
Agreed, a cool art style is so much more valuable imo than high fidelity/realistic graphics.
Nintendo pumps out something like super Mario wonder.. Great gameplay, looks great, probably small budget, sells mad copies, makes money, gamers having fun, and probably didn't take long to make. Just seems like a better way to run your development.
As a consumer I prefer it.
Cuphead is gorgeous, but that hand drawn arts type is alot of work. It's much appreciated though, it's something special.
Then I see some shit like skull & bones....
