Going multi platform just keeps on making more and more sense.
Yep! The future is multiplatform. The kryptonite to platform loyalists.
Corporate lusting gamers who can't disconnect their worldview from the identity of their favorite plastic box have locked themselves in a cage... They demand bloated, expensive content, but then when their company can't recoup expenses they feel betrayed by that content going multiplatform.
At no time do these gamers think about the studio trying to survive or the millions of new gamers that now get to experience that content.... They are damaged by a great game being available to gamers outside their world view of battling corporations.
I’m not coming from the fanboy perspective because I can’t relate to that. But this post is missing the point of what exclusive content is and why it exists. Millions of new gamers won’t get to experience “that content” because, “that content” won’t exist. We are getting fewer and fewer games as these console become more “united.” With fewer chances to strike gold, publishers won’t bother investing in anything risky or innovative. We’ll just continue to get COD, AC, Madden and Football/Soccer games with even less in between.
Jez Corden spoke on this topic last night on a podcast. He is saying 100% of Xbox content is going multiplat, and likely even day one. But it’s not out of some forward thinking strategy. Xbox is selling FAR fewer games than they anticipated. Far less than they did in the Xbox One era. (They’re selling less hardware too). Xbox’s software sales are so bad right now that this dude is throwing in the towel, saying consumers are willingly giving PlayStation a monopoly and he is blaming Xbox consumers. He has since walked that back a bit, but this much is clear. If consumers can spend less money, they will. Thats not a good thing for an industry that relies on money to fund and market new games. Publishers aren’t gonna accept those losses. They‘ll just make fewer games.
I'm not disregarding your points, but these companies have baked so many internal issues into their development process, from costs, to lacking innovation, to not finishing products and giving customers value for their dollar... It feels like this scenario of multiplatform games has been fed by a current model that no longer works. At least that's nearly all the evidence we are seeing is saying.
To call multiplatform games the boogie man bringing down the industry but ignoring all the steps taken by corporations to bring us to this point is selling it short.
Less games and less innovation is our future, except right now we very low innovation in AAA games. We survive on the indie model to move gaming forward and yet we covet the lazy experiences that don't deliver... If we do in fact end up in a scenario where there are less games and they are mostly fifa cod and assassin's Creed then the entirety of the market will move on to value indie games that much more....
If publishers believe that they will make forever profits by just selling these aforementioned games and that's it, I'd like to see then try and we can see how long they remain viable and also how quickly gamers revolt and reject them all together....
