Xbox Shutting Down Multiple Studios

it would be interesting to hear exactly what happened behind the scenes with redfall, arkane austin, zenimax and ms.

i wasn't super keen on prey, but arkane lyon are one of my favourite devs, and i'd take an attempt at the kind of game aa were going for with prey over far cry 37 or similar any day of the week. but you could just see with redfall that it was a game that didn't have a clue what it wanted to be, that arkane were completely out of their comfort zone, and it was 100% not a game aimed at their fanbase.

i tried it, it was absolutely atrocious. must've been incredibly embarrassing for anyone involved.

i'm certain i read a quote from phil post launch saying he was unhappy with himself about it, and ms would be revisiting arkane austin's development and delivery process, so it's no surprise it's not been supported. there was no hope of rescue for redfall

So a few months ago Phil heads to Japan to sure up games for Xbox and closes his Japanese studio months later, and some of you people think he's fit to run Xbox. I wouldn't let him run a chook raffle.

The saddest part about Arkane Austin closing is that Redfall isn't even the game they wanted to make. Prey (which was not the name they wanted for the game) was more solid and a better reflection of their talent. It just feels like they weren't given a chance. I can understand the financial argument for it, but the execs like Spencer and Bond should be quiet with all of the PR nonsense assertions that they will give these studios creative freedom.

Overall, I think 8BE bring up good valid points here and while I'm not the biggest fan of Hi-Fi Rush despite the game is fun, it did win several awards (including the game awards) and closing Tango has got to be the biggest mistake I ever seen coming from MS. Buying Bethesda and Activision really cost MS tons of money and its hard investing it back is why there's so many layoffs. Sony as well but MS has the most layoffs:

Again, this is why I prefer buying my games over using Game Pass.

this whole thing has made me continue my playthrough of Hi-Fi Rush I started last year lol. Think I only have a few chapters left.

The string of unfortunate layoffs/studio closures at MS reminds me of the scene where Cell, once attaining its perfect form by absorbing other Andorids, is cornered and spits out Android 17. Wonder how long it takes it to eventually self-destruct, haha.

All joking aside, as someone who really enjoyed Evil Within and Ghostwire Tokyo (I missed Hi-Fi Rush at launch, but will be playing it on PS5), I sincerely hope these talented creators find new jobs as soon as possible.

I mean, this is what we deserve. I know this is System Wars and the last thing I want is to make this political or a social/cultural thing, but we vote politicians in that favor corporate and capitalist interests, and put their constituents last, and we continue our backslide into modern-era feudalism.

This carries over into the video games we play, the movies and shows we watch, the news we read, and so on and so forth. Just look at Gamespot; it's basically one giant ad that caters to the trend ticker. "Destiny is trending! SPAM THE DESTINY ARTICLES!"

We own less. We have fewer rights. Art and education are put last while profit and growth are put first, when we could instead find a happy balance of all. Instead of sharing resources and adopting a "rising tide lifts all ships" mentality, we resource guard and say "Well I don't need this, but I don't want you to have it".

TL;DR: We shouldn't be surprised when our politicians don't stop giant companies from gobbling up littler ones, then shutting them down to increase their net worth. This is late-stage capitalism, and until we repeal Citizens United and place politicians in place that favor people and consumer over CEO's and corporations, we don't deserve anything better.

Forget about the national politics, too, and remember to vote state and local! It matters more, arguably!

Gamers on forums like these talk about wanting new games but the best selling games are rehashes and sequels. The same apply to games with high accolades, media praise etc. None of that matters if the casual gamers aren't supporting said game. SW and other outlets like these are bubbles of group think. Once you realize this, you just have fun with the common nonsense. The side effect is that some folks believe that these bubbles are a reflection of reality.😂

Oh I know, we are a bubble and a minority. Most people buy a console to play one game year round (CoD, Halo, Madden) with maybe a few other titles sprinkled in. A large chunk of that massive PC gaming community I'm so proud of is millions of moms just playing the Sims or some farming game 😋

But like an old poster once said, if a chocolate factory known for amazing chocolate started selling literal shit one day, and everyone still ate it, isn't it your job to yell from the mountain top "STOP EATING SHIT!"?

AND this is why I was always sceptic when Microsoft made a multitude of purchases. Me as well as others, feel like Microsoft wants a monopoly over the games industry and, want to be more of a service (Game pass) than a Home console manufacture.
