It is rare where I'll spend too much money anymore, which is why I said the retro scene is sort of a drag these days. It has become a collectible market vs getting ahold of something one might actually like to use. If I see something at a thrift shop at a decent price I'll pick it up. Recently grabbed a mint Lime Green Gameboy Color for 8 dollars.
A lot of retro prices went down actually compared to how they were a few years ago, due to re-releases in virtual consoles and HD remakes.
The scene is still taking on the same trends as most other niche hobbies--if that is the phrase to use. Prices are getting so high that markets are being created within the market itself. Flashcarts are being made to optimize the user experience and people are supporting it; this is only growing because of what is happening on the other end. Then there are big corporations like Gamestop going back into the scene.
As of now Gamestop has said we will sell x and y systems, etc etc etc. However, I highly suspect that they are in the midst of acquiring reproduction licenses from companies, or some form of legal connection to the property to where they are able to brand their own repro carts, cds, and systems.
At that point the rare of the rare real products will go sky high, and a bunch of people just won't care.
The scene as of now is reminding me back when Comics were the huge thing, or later when Warhammer 40k was huge.
