As I've said in another thread, Alan Wake 2 is definitely the next-gen Crysis given the fact the RTX 4090 almost brought to its knees. My RTX 4070 seems to be handling it well in 1440p with RT/high and using frame generation does give it an edge.
But yep, I'm enjoying Alan Wake 2, this game is a sleeper hit for sure as I wasn't expecting this game to be that fun. But CP2077 is still the king here mainly for its Neon lights in Night City are just awesome, especially when it's been raining and the ground is wet for the reflection. Alan Wake 2 can look good without using pathtracing.
Overall, I think Alan Wake 2 is a graphical game since the good old days of Crysis, and a must play for any PC gamer using RTX 4070 or above 40 series if just for the pathtracing alone. And did I mention, that Alan Wake 2 is a really good game, it's shaping up to be included in my GOTY 2023 list. But sadly, I don't think it manages to beat CP2077 for "the best-looking game so far" and even I can say using pathtracing is much less impressive on a linear game with static levels compared to huge, dense, and dynamic open-worlds such as CP2077. (This also applies to Phantom Liberty)
P.S, I can't comment on Marvel's Spider-Man 2 until it comes to PC, but I can at least say that Miles Morales PC port is slightly good looking but it just doesn't measure up to CP2077. I don't expect Marvel's Spider-Man 2 PC port in the future will be all that, so more the same as what I've seen on PS5.
@davillain: To be fair, if for some reason you are not allowed to use frame generation or DLSS there are many games that bring the RTX 4090 to its knees and they all have one thing in common: path tracing.

Am I missing any games that use full path tracing?
I tested myself and in native 4K (or DLAA) with no FG I get 15-30 fps in all those games.
But with DLSS 3.5 FG quality the FPS in all of those games goes up to around 70-75 fps (60-90 fps in gameplay)
AW2 seems to perform exactly the same as the other 4 games on that list, while looking better than all of them.
Then there's City skylines or whatever its called that got sub 30 fps on a 4090. I assume it supports DLSS 3.5 but the reviewers omitted that for the clickbaity title. Not sure if has path tracing or even regular ray tracing.
All though no where near as bad, Dying Light 2 (which I believe as full RT-GI) gets 45 fps at 4K native max but I got between 120-180 fps (with around 160 fps average) with DLSS Quality /FG. 45 fps is unplayable for me so technically DL2 is also brining a 4090 to its knees if we are excluding the DLSS suite.
Better on Xbox Series X than PS5, rock solid performance on Series X while PS5 unable to maintain steady 60fps. Devs decided to go with mesh shaders for the game, giving Xbox an edge as their optimization is design around its use. PS5 was not, rather having an advantage of prim shaders. I guess the issues aren't so much devs not putting the time to optimize their ports, but their choices like this, which route they go and who benefits from optimization could also play a major part. Perhaps this explains a good bit of this gens performance disparities. So far this has worked to Sony's advantage but seems devs want to shift to mesh shaders now. Capcom themselves even signaled this would be a major change in their upcoming engine revision. It was announced a while back Xbox updated tools for this advantage yet nobody jumped on, likely because it would be too burdensome mid-project without changing the engine. Well, seems the time has come, people are jumping on board.
I've seen people assert the game still retains close parity between PS5 and Series X, but the optimization for Series X could give it an uncapped framerate advantage or higher graphic fidelity that can't be exploited due to parity agreements with Sony. Jokes are starting to go around PS5 will hold Xbox back.
Digital Foundry claims they can't do a console head to head because they haven't been given a Xbox review code. Though I suspect as Sony shills they're biding their time hoping patches and updates will level the playing field, not wanting to concede a W to Xbox for a graphic powerhouse.

Everything you said regarding not using DLSS and frame generation can bring down the 4090 games you mentioned above. I played Dying Light 2 on launch and the first problem it had was the memory kept leaking at the time, so I never really went back to play it all this time.
Still, I appreciate PC developers pushing GPUs to the limits and abandoning ancient GPUs, I would rather have futureproof titles if possible. Pathtracing will take a while to fully mature enough it won't strip the GPU power, I can see why Nvidia is trying to get those Supers variants out early into 2024.

I'll say that throughout the first couple of stages, I thought AW2 was impressive, but not past Cyberpunk. However, after getting through the game some more, I definitely think it's a contender for sure.
