GOTY24 will come down to 2 games this year... Crystal ball edition!

Hey friends! On a small break from protecting Super Earth and was thinking about all the games being released this year yet to drop... Last year I would've bet my mortgage that Zelda would sweep the awards season but bam! Here comes balders gate to garner so many more accolades...

If you were a betting man... Or woman or whatever, what two games would you bank on being the two games dukeing it out for the coveted Doritos Game of the Year Award in December....? (Be bold and declarative! Makes it more fun!) each of my choices will receive a crystal ball rating for accuracy.... 🔮1 to 🔮🔮🔮🔮🔮5

I'm gonna go with.... Helldivers 2 and Dragons Dogma 2.

Helldivers won't be topped in terms of gameplay and design for the year full stop. It will be a more engaging, tactical, collaborative, satisfying, death defying, thrilling game than the rest, I have no doubt. It's drawbacks will be that it released in February.... But, considering there will likely still be a massive community playing throughout 2024 I think it stays in our psyche for the glorious victory it is on every level. 🔮🔮🔮🔮🔮🔮🔮🔮

Dragon's Dogma 2 could be the only game with a solution to defeating helldivers because it too will contain more engaging gameplay than the rest of 2024, but it will do so in a sprawling open world with stories and different pacing.... You won't be able to play another game like Dragons Dogma because it's unique brand of action rpg is a testemate to developers given the freedom to design gameplay outside the box of safe AAA design. For those who sink into DD2 and learn it's systems, will be treated to immense depth, thrilling moments and hopefully lots of open world stories and mysteries worth exploring!🔮🔮🔮🔮🔮

Dragon's Dogma 2 has the more difficult path in my opinion because helldivers is nearly perfect and much of DDs success will be determined by how it handles open world missions and story telling.

What 2 games will be in major discussion for GOTY24?

Helldivers 2 is fun, but no way it gets GOTY.

It's like the Grammys at this point, it'll go to the most popular game. Id imagine Dragons Dogma if it scores high enough, or some AAA unannounced title that checks all of the mainstream boxes

It would be such a massive win for the direction of game design if helldivers won... Pure gameplay joy that will not be topped this year. I actually can't imagine any of this year's games getting beyond that.

Why wouldn't you suggest FF7 Rebirth?

its a 93 on metacritic, the highest rated game of 2024, and the highest rated FF since FFIX released 24 years ago. Its higher rated than FFX. The best FF game in my opinion (and not even close)

FF7 Rebirth is by far the biggest candidate for GOTY so far.

Dragon's Dogma 2 could top it, but it could also flop.

Other than that 2024 doesn't look as deep as 2023, as top-heavy as 2022 or as great as 2020 was.

DD2, FF7R2 and Judas will be the three candidates for GOTY me thinks.

Maybe Hades 2 ? Hades was runner up GOTY 2020, right behind none other than TLOU2. Yeah that's the top 4 of 2024 for sure.

Add in Elden Ring's Shadow of the Erd Tree and you have the top 5 GOTY candidates. for the year.

I know its a dlc, but if any dlc is winning GOTY, it's Elden Ring's.

Hades could win, but not the glorious sacrifices of the helldivers? Sir, don't you dare take a knee during the super Earth national anthem... I do like hades and think it's gameplay carries it in ways that game designers should be paying attention to.

@TheEroica: Well to be fair, and in Helldivers 2's favour, if there ANY year where a AA, indie game could win GOTY its 2024 (or 2021, 2014, 2012 but those years are have gone by...)

There's no real big heavy hitter IMO. (no offense to DD2, FF7R2, Hades 2 and Judas)

Fromsoft: Just releasing DLC

Naughty Dog: Nothing just another remaster of TLOU2, that no one asked for. TLOU3 will be the PS5 swansong.

Kojima Productions: Nothing. Death Stranding 2 comes next year

Rockstar North: Nothing. GTA 6 comes next year

Nintendo: Zelda TOTK was last year. Next Zelda is years away.

Sony Santa Monica: GOWR 2 years ago... Next GOW game or new IP won't release for a while

Valve: doesn't make games anymore

Bioware: isn't a top tier studio anymore

Bethesda Game Studios: Isn't a top studio anymore

Bungie: Isn't a top studio anymore

Rare: Isn't a top studio anymore

Larian: BG3 was last year

Rocksteady: rubbish studio these days and Suicide squad was rubbish.

Insomniac: Spiderman 2 last year... Wolverine delayed to 2025.

CDPR: Witcher 4 / Witcher remake won't come until 2025+

Sucker Punch: GoT 2 is probably 2025-26

TL;DR. Its this year or never, Helldivers!!

My money's on Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. Tekken 8 is a good runner up. Really hoping Dragon's Dogma 2 turns out well to be a strong enough contender as well.

I don't see the feb release as disadvantage. I look forward to the new content AH has in store, awaiting HD2s first october 26th, liberty day. New game master abilities, mechs and vehicles, new enemies (Automatons get an AT AT siege mech), third enemy faction surely, more warbonds and more.

Helldivers definitely a GoTY nominee at least. The game is great and caters to a big enough audience that it will make an appearance.

Shadow Of The Erdtree will most likely count as a whole new game because it'll be huge. If that happens, its the only "game" that might steal it from DD2, but i personally don't think that it will if DD2 is as good as it looks. We really need to see how interesting to explore the world of DD2 is. It might have an awesome combat system and fun & varied enemies to fight, but if the world is similary to asscreed, that would make the game very flawed.

I agree with your take on DD2. The gameplay looks sublime for a sequel to an already great combat scheme...but what are we doing in that big world and does it respect my time.

I have high hopes for Dragons Dogma 2, and think that Unicorn Overlord might find a spot for a few awards as well. No clue how Rise of the Ronin will turn out, but it could be a dark horse as well. Rumor has it that Dragon Age releases this year, but I've heard that they have turned it into another generic hack n slash like FF these days... then again I guess if that's the case it's a shoe in. 5 out of 10 gameplay gets a 92 after all. A lot of other unannounced or games without a release date will drop in the next 10 months as well.

I think it's too early to call it, but I do know if FFVII Rebirth wins I'm glad the industry is restructuring because (Note: I'm not referring to anyone who lost or will lose a job, I am so sorry for them and their families and hope they land on their feet with brand new and even better jobs soon) I for one just don't see the vision, and it appears the vast majority of people feel the same and are tired of slow, bloated, over simplified/hand holding, AAA games with hyper inflated budgets and 10 year dev cycles.

Although I haven't played Helldivers 2 I would love to see that game win, since it would send Shockwave throughout the industry. Modeling studios and teams around a smaller game like that just makes a lot more sense... hell I think they could even reduce prices and dev time even more, and with advances in AI and procedural generation we will probably see the fruits of that labor soon enough. I just hope it isn't soulless and uninspired, artists and visionaries will probably still need to help mold the clay for the foreseeable future.

I've been saying for a few years now that it felt like another crash was coming soon... it's just crazy it's happening when games are finally starting to release. I hope the industry bounces back fast and learns from these mistakes.

I could see Helldivers 2 getting a nom. Nobody throwing a hat in the ring for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2?

I can't say that I play games for GOTY status. That is like playing games in hopes someone I don't know likes it more than every other game.

Kinda disturb it's barely getting any hype within the gaming media despite the release date is in August 2024. As someone who really likes Journey to the West, I truly hope it does win GOTY for a Chinese game being SP focus only.

Good God no.... For me it would that would be celebrating everything wrong with modern gaming.

FF7 so far, being realistic. Dragon's dogma could do very well. Helldivers 2 will get nominated for sure. That's about it.

When it comes to generating discussion, Palworld and nothing comes close.

When it comes to what journalists will givee, Dragons Dogma 2 seems likely followed by Tekken 8. Helldivers 2 was nowhere near as popular with the journalists as it was with players.

When it comes to personal preferences, I think this year will go to Tekken 8 and Unicorn Overlord for me. Cancelling my Dragons Dogma 2 preorder for Unicorn Overlord was the best thing I have done in a while.

Personally, I think FF7 leads the pack, followed by Infinite Wealth and Helldivers 2, but games like DD2 and Rise of the Ronin have the potential to be strong contenders.

I also think Metaphor: ReFantazio by Atlus has the potential to be a sleeper hit like BG3 was last year. It's a game that the team that made the critically acclaimed Persona 5 worked on for almost 7 years. It may not sell like crazy, but it could be one of the most critically acclaimed games this year.

As for Nintendo, I have seen some Nintendo fans speculating that MP4 might come out later this year. Nintendo seems to be very focused on quality, even scrapping it once and changing the studio to Retro. So if it does come out, it could be a strong contender like Mario Wonder was last year.

Not sure about Hellblade II. To me it looks like a very high budget arthouse piece aimed at a very specific audience and I doubt it will have any general appeal, unlike Alan Wake 2 or RE4 Remake last year. Also it is $50, digital-only, and about 8 hours long.

As for the Indiana Jones game, it looks like an upscaled PS3/360 game and nothing innovative from what I can see in the trailer. If it wants to be a GotY contender like last year's Spider-Man 2, it needs a significant blush-up that will take at least a couple of years.

From all the feedback of rebirth I fully expect that to be up there.
