Poo I'm not a cow TC. lol :P
MS has 20 odd million invested users in their platform why would they abandon that? Sony currently has what? 50 odd million? From where I'm sat MS has asked the pragmatic question how do we get those consumers? it's not just games because there's a large social element to gaming, people game where their friends are, okay realistically are we going to convince entire social groups to swap platforms and abandon their collective libraries at once? no, well lets make our games available to those 50 million players, there will of course be some overlap but by doing what they're rumoured to be doing the potential sales base probably more than doubles, with minor increase in production costs for a PS version but nothing dramatic, pure money decision we have invested x number of dollars developing a game, current install base and exclusivity policy limits our potential return lets relax the exclusivity and maximise the return. The interesting bit will be when the Sony financial pressure hits and an investor points out they could access 20 million more users instantly and not have to pay for exclusivity by adopting the same approach increasing both their potential total sales numbers and improving their margins on those software sales.
@Zero_epyon: Why? He actually loves gaming.
He should remain a quiet consumer. For our sake!
Chances arethat the next step in the evolution of gaming is integrating PC launchers and gaming into console gaming. Its only a matter of time before a console manufacturer makes a deal with Steam, Epic, or possibly even someone like GoG or another competitor.
The two will be married soon enough.. when? I have no idea, but its going to happen. Either MS makes its own launcher, SONY makes their own, or one of the two latches onto one of the before mentioned launchers. It could however be another outside source like Steam or Epic deciding to release a console as well.. Steam machines didn't work because there were too many options, the prices were too high, and it wasn't a seamless integration without jumping through hoops. The first to streamline the process and offer an ecosystem and accessibility like a console with the choices/options of PC gaming wins. Right now it's just a race to get there.
Should Microsoft discontinue the Xbox console, which company would you like to see step into the console business? How would they fair against Sony and Nintendo? In my opinion, Apple would be the first to throw their hat in. They're already pushing console level games to iOS and MacOS and they're not shy about making hardware since they make their chips.
But they already tried, and failed, miserably.
Looks like maybe it won't have to be replaced? Phil Spencer allegedly said that there are no plans to stop making Xbox consoles. Good news!
Journalist Shannon Liao reports that there was a townhall at Xbox this past Tuesday in which Phil Spencer assured employees that they were not getting out of the console hardware market, and would continue to make Xboxes going forward. Xbox strategy continues to employ “multiple kinds of devices,” he said.
PS transitioning to PC benefits everyone. Why would u want to keep Sony competing with these random ass companies that almost definitely will lose. Let PS dominate then i am sure once Sony realized they reach the maximum amount of gamers possible its time to move to PC market. We play the long game.

Are you saying they should make their games day one on PC?

Thats the end goal
Texas Instruments
The gamepad should be nothing but calculator inputs
Does Texas Instruments has a reputation for making expensive calculators? Just a thought as I can imagine a home console that is more expensive than the PS3.

You have a limited imagination:
Isn't the best replacement for the Xbox an enterprising PC manufacturer making an $850 budget PC specifically designed for gaming and marketed as such.
Seen videos on YouTube where that is the estimated cost of matching the Series X and PS5's hardware and I would expect any Pro versions to higher than $500
All we see in ads is play it on Xbox or play it on Playstation. We never, in the UK, see ads to play it on PC - hence why consoles are still the go to option for new or lazy (like me) gamers.
Maybe Alienware could do a budget PC and start to market it - could sell to those Xboxers who don't want a Playstation - IYSWIM
@onesiphorus: Pre-smartphone era, they were the de facto calculating device in American public schools. They likely still are, but I was introduced to programming when I found out the chips were capable of running old DOS games and GB fare.
Nowadays I think their main revenue derives from chip integration with IoT and licensing with the the likes of Qualcomm. It’s been awhile since I checked in with their offerings.

I would like to see Samsung to get into gaming, but it won't happen. Apple has a much higher chance to get into gaming than anyone else.
Phil Spencer reiterated that Xbox has no plans to leave the hardware industry and will continue making consoles

If they have a full screen game focused UI that hides the OS completely and manages everything for you, auto-configures games for the best experience on the hardware before you launch it, auto-downloads precompiled shader caches, and has controller profiles for each game specifically for the controller that comes with it, and everything works with the controller including a pop-up keyboard for text input, basically set up so that you don't even know it's a PC, then it might work.
Basically like a set top box version of the Steam Deck without a screen and without battery considerations.
Apple can try but I've sworn to myself I'm not buying anything from Apple.
Also I believe that Apple's console would just be an Ouya.
I don't think so, they are not stupid. If they get into gaming, i believe they will have the most powerful hardware, and by far the most expensive. It'd be the system made for the "prestigious gamer". And like i said it many times before, if they actually try, and create this echosystem with their pc's, phones and vr, i think they'd be very successful. But they have to go all in, not half assed in.
At this point, I just don't care for another console in the gaming market nor I don't care what happens to MS Xbox console at this point. PC should be the main driving force of gaming as far as I'm concerned.
At least both Nintendo & Sony will still have consoles, that's should be good enough for everyone.
@davillain: Makes sense. There will always be people who want consoles so they'll always be around. Not sure if PC will be the main driving force because gaming has expanded beyond core gamers and it's the broadest market that's driving it mostly. If anything it could become mobile.

Let's say they use that M1 chip that is in their phones and Macbooks:
It would still be an Ouya, because it would just be a game console designed to run mobile games.
Nahh, let's keep it PC / PS / Nintendo and we're good.
Yup, why add more?
PC will ultimately win.
I imagine PS will be next to fall, then Nintendo...and finally the Master Race will take over.
@mrbojangles25:
Good idea actually. You know why? Because the gaming community needs to unite behind a main medium. That medium would be the pc/ master race.
I'm sorry but where in this thread was it stated that the Xbox was going away today? Stay on topic people...
