So... about TotK having been forgotten already...

Can someone explain that narrative? Since appearantly watching people on Twitter and Youtube gives you more knowledge than people who actually played the game.

I guess this is down to the nature of the internet? What is popular one day is already forgotten the next.

Be it some celebrity caught in a storm or a game doing well... There's this constant drive towards something new.

@Maroxad: What do you mean explained the narrative of being forgotten? Tears of the Kingdom came out this past May, the game had a good run for a month and other popular games started to take its place. Be at BG3, Alan Wake 2, you name it. There is no narrative of being forgotten, just too many good games came out this year.

It's a kids game, so I'm still playing it with my kid. We've had it a few months. I don't think anyone has forgotten it.

You are correct. But...

Basically, SOMEONE on this board has been asserting for a while that TotK has been forgotten by everyone already, despite this thread providing evidence to the contrary.

Either way, despite a certain someone's assertions on this board, TotK continues to sell phenomenally and maintains a relevant place in gaming discourse.

But TotK will outsell all of those games. Possibly combined. Making the narrative even more asinine

The thought that a Zelda game (Breath of the Wild) is selling close to a Super Smash Bros. game (Ultimate) and selling more than a mainline Pokemon game (Sword and Shield) is something I never had thought before.

To be fair, Pokémon has never been so crappy before. That should have some form of impact.

I have no idea why GameFreak is still a thing. Pokémon sells itself. Why not make Pokémon good by giving it to a good developer? It'd sell even more.

From a fan's perspective. I believe Nintendo's success comes in large part from cultivated talent.

When you compare the credits scenes of one Nintendo game to the next, you see that a good chunk of their staff remains the same between games. Hell, the entire SMB1 team was still working on Wonder.

Im old enough to remember when system wars was predicting overall sales numbers for the switch, and saying a success would be if it sold 30 mill. "but how is it going to compete with the powerhouse consoles"

Back in 2017, people didn't believe me when I said the Switch could sell 100 million... Now it's on the verge of challenging the PS2's record.

But one thing I didn't see coming back in 2017: Zelda outselling Mario. Out of the two, Mario was always the more popular franchise while Zelda was the more prestige franchise. But with BOTW and TOTK, Zelda games are now outselling mainline Mario games.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet prove that GameFreak is actually creative. The issue is time. They needed more time to fix the bugs, and they needed more time to craft a better Pokemon league.

It seems like Nintendos ups and downs have only been getting bigger. But when did the cycle start? N64 to GameCube? Or was it SNES to N64? There is usually debate around whether the N64 was a failure or not. Being outsold 3:1 seems like a failure to me, but sheep seem to be pretty split

For context, there’s “over 30 million” Game Pass subscribers across Xbox and PC. Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pass has 38 million on the Nintendo Switch alone. I thought that was an important tidbit to bring up. Also, the last official “active users“ number we got from Xbox is 120 million. There’s 330 million Nintendo accounts.

Carry on!

You were just in the GP thread agreeing with me about the lack of context, and yet you're being deliberately misleading with the context here.

@lebanese_boy The anti Xbox fanboy who used to have a gamespot score as their avatar. That person insisted that everyone had forgotten TotK for months even as it remained on the charts.

I dunno man. Game Freak made some other game in 2019 not named Pokémon, and it was also terrible.

Zelda ToTK is really front loaded. I think the magic is just gone this time it sold 18m in its first month but moved a relatively small quantity since june. Considering the hype it kinda surprising.

GameFreak top management is the problem. Nintendo delayed Zelda, and yes System Wars clowned them both times, but it proved worth it. Pokemon didn't delay, and we see the results. The devs at GameFreak have talent, but the guys in suits are just greedy.

The Pokemon Company was the issue. Churn out games, so they can sell more toys.

It was 18 million in the first 2 months. Not first month. Nearly selling a million copies in a post release quarter is no mean feat.

I never would have thought that the Switch would sell this many units. I was wrong.
