Unicorn Overlord is the next game from Vanillaware, makers of gems like Dragon's Crown, Muramasa, Odin Sphere and 13 sentinels. It is a strategy RPG much in the same vein of Ogre Battle. Where you create squads of units and have them engage in battles when they come into contact with enemy squads. The strategy elements are in real time. While the encounters are in automated turn based.
But the game is really good, so much so it, thus far trounces anything made by Matsuno himself. The gameplay is the king here though (whereas Matsuno excels at storytelling). The time limit is tight enough to keep you moving, but not stressed out, the pacing is superb, gradually introducing you to new challenges at a steady pace, the artstyle as per usual for vanillaware is top notch, and the mechanics are as good as they go for Real Time Strategy RPGs.
Unfortunately, the story seems to be rubbish. Completely forgettable. Between this and FE:E it just seems we can't have a strategy RPG that combines good gameplay with good story.
The devs have so much confidence in it, they provided you with a 7 hour long demo. That is more gameplay than some Sony First Party titles have in the full 70 dollar game.
My hype level is at a 9. That was my impression after the demo.
