A solid Metal Gear title but not the best in the series.

User Rating: 8 | Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots PS3
Metal Gear Solid 4 came out in the spring of 2008 during a time when many considered the make or break year for the PlayStation 3 System. Needless to say 2008 was a great year for the system with several critically acclaimed games being released, MGS4 being one of them, the highly anticipated final chapter of a series many consider the epitome of the stealth genre. While MGS4 in short is a great title it's not the pinnacle of the series and I will explain why. PRESENTATION/STORY MGS4 picks up after the end of MGS2, Snake starts his mission somewhere in the Middle East to stop the newly discovered patriots AI with the help of Otacon, Rose, Campbell and the now cybernetic enhanced Raiden. The story is much less streamlined and much more so straightforward no more unnecessary over the top melodramatic storytelling or plot twists, MGS4's story from start to finish is considered by many to be a fan service to all fans of the series. GRAPHICS MGS4's character models where at the time the best you could get on consoles, only rivaled by Dead Space and Gears of War 2 later on in the year, where MGS4 fails however is in the Technical graphics department, Rendering at a Sub HD resolution I couldn't help but notice severe bluryness in some sections of the game along with some bland looking environments that don't match up together well the excellent character models. MGS4 also has some FPS drops in sections where you are detected by a lot of enemies and sections where you have no choice but to gun down waves of enemies. Regardless MGS4 graphics where impressive for 2008. GAMEPLAY MGS4 uses the non fixed free roaming camera that MGS3 subsistence uses, this was an excellent change as the over the top only camera is outdated and really showed its problem with bad angles interrupting your experience in Snake Eater. MGS4 has the same stealth elements as its predecessors had but the game unfortunately doesn't encourage you to use stealth, with an endless amounts of guns equipments mods and add ons you can buy it's sad to see that Kojima games put much less emphasis on stealth for this title unlike its predecessors, MGS4 could have revolutionised the stealth genre but unfortanlty it didn't as I felt that the game became a third person shooter with stealth mechanics added in instead of a stealth game with some TPS elements! Regardless MGS4's gameplay is still loads of fun. 8/10 Dan Della
