Because they release a new version every year which makes most releases very much alike with stuff like updated player names and stuff. Only those who really enjoy the sport can cope with that.
Bad video-games exist and they are abundant. Big Rigs was mentioned and that is one bad game.
What might occur is that some game might be bad for you but someone not used to the series would find it pleasant. It happened to me with Mario Kart Double Dash. It offers some gimmicks but nothing Super Mario Kart and Mario Kart 64 didn't already offer in higher doses. I played those games way too much and when I tried Double Dash I thought it was awful. Some people might like it, someone who started playing Mario Kart during the GameCube days wouldn't need to make the comparison, because he doesn't have the experience from past games.
No, back in the old days games weren't realistic because technology didn't allow them to be. It's not like everyone had the technology to make a Crysis graphically but decided to stick to making Quake the way it is because they were old school.
Sure, it makes me play the game after I'm done with it trying to complete "decent" achievements. I can't bother with stuff like get 1 billion kills with melee weapons with your TV off or play 1 trillion online matches.
