@mogan: Mate you should hear my graphics card. I didn't even know the fans could spin that fast.

@Xevac: It was definitely on our radar! But unfortunately, sometimes the right people for the job are not always available at the right time.

Thanks for reading!

@Time_Assasin: I appreciate you coming out of the woodwork to post this long and thoughtful comment!

I guess this article is a bit of a reality check. Naturally, both Sony and Microsoft want to give lovers of games the impression that the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X are going to be earth-shattering must-have new things, and presentations like this are designed to get us really, really excited to buy the next big expensive game box.

I'm 100% on board with your perspective that innovation is never going to be a big immediate leap. It is a slow progression and truly surprising leaps are rare--I wanna say maybe the Switch was the last really big surprise for me? I know that, and you know that.

Sony and Microsoft know that too, but of course they're not going to say it's just another step. That's why phrases like "paradigm shift" and "designed exclusively for the PlayStation 5" are thrown out there, to give us the impression of something BIG, and it's easy to get carried away by the hype. Imagining something dramatically different is exciting! But looking back nothing really fit into that idea for me. Someone could be foolish for thinking that something bigger was going to happen, sure. But it's because this presentation and the rest of the marketing around launch led them to believe that.

As I mentioned in the article, familiar can sometimes be good too. I'm excited about a lot of these familiar games! But I do quietly wish there was something truly huge and never-before-seen shown during this presentation that genuinely did make me think "this an impressively unique thing could only have been done on PlayStation 5."

@gargungulunk: I actually had written it as 'Aeris' in the first draft of this, but had to change it for obvious reasons.

@rekonym: Wow, Shadow Man. That is definitely not a game I thought I would be reminiscing about today.
