Even after so many re-releases, this is a great way to experience 2D "Sonic."

User Rating: 8 | Sonic Origins PS5

*DISCLAIMER: One more? One more. This is obvious, but this review is just going to be my opinion on the "Sonic Origins" collection by itself, and not as much on the individual games. If you want to hear my opinions on those (and prepare yourself for some unpopular ones), you can find them on my page.*

Pros:

  • The games themselves are preserved exactly as you remember.
  • The visuals, settings, and options for this remaster collection are great.
  • The addition of "Anniversary" mode that basically gives you infinite lives is great given the relative difficulty of the classic "Sonic" games.
  • Getting to use Debug Mode as a way to break the game and play through Super Sonic almost entirely is awesome.
  • Adding an in-game museum with unlockable content is a great new idea for both new and old players.
  • The inclusion of classic "Sonic" instruction manuals and similar content really makes this collection feel like a celebration of old-school "Sonic."
  • The new animated cutscenes are a joy to watch.

Cons:

  • It could've included a few more new things to give it that last finishing touch (rewind and save states, maybe?).
  • "Sonic CD" seems to have gotten the least changes here, and I understand that it's because it's using the 2011 remaster, but even so, the fact that some in-game features don't apply to "CD" is a bit weird.

Consensus: "Sonic Origins" delivers as a great collection, and it's wild to me how even after re-releasing these games so many times, we still have collections like this that know how to add unique options and features. Even if you already own seven copies of the "Sonic" games, this has a lot of value for gamers new and old. If you're looking for the perfect way to learn about and appreciate The Blue Blur's classic history, "Sonic Origins" is the right place to go.
