Apparently Square Enix is having a bad time. This is very sad news, they are a wonderful company. Hope everything improves.

Square Enix announced they will abandon the production of previously greenlit HD games (console games). The total loss amounts to 22.1 billion yen (~ $140.8 million USD). Moving forward, they will be more selective in the development process with which IPs to work on.

@hardwenzen: Their games are of higher quality than Ubisuck. They also don't fill them with MTX.

@uninspiredcup: Well, they chose to release their games on only one platform. Now, they have to suffer the consequences.

They are, yes, but you could also find some positives from Ubishit when compared to Team Ninja. One of which is their games not looking like late ps3/early ps4 games with almost ps2 level draw distance. Team Ninja was completely lost after NG2. Then, they finally found their way with Nioh, and instead of building on the foundation like what Fromsoft does, they took the lazy af route, and are just copy pasting shit from game to game (just like Badthesda) and call it a day. This is not how you get people exited for your next title.

edit: 🤢🤢🤢i thought this was the The Last Ronin thread🤢🤢🤢

I’m sure it would help more if they released all their games on more systems instead of making exclusivity deals.

Sony's selfish behaviour has made sure that nobody gets to enjoy Square Enix games.

Why should I buy their games on PC again? I have to wait 2 years and my contribution will not go towards getting more games.

Uhm yeah no, I'll spend my money on companies that aren't making ass backwards decisions.

Meanwhile in Square-Enix

Step 1: Invest in a hell of a lot of GaaS Games.

Step 2: End service of said games within a Year.

Step 3: Profit.

What could possibly go wrong.

AAA publishers (and their board) are only interested in the trends that make money at the moment. They have absolutely zero long term vision or goals and will go after whatever is popular currently.

Like everyone here said, relying on Sony to pamper SE isn't doing them any favor and now they are paying the ultimate price...losing profits.

I haven't looked at their recent financials. Are they actually hurting, or is this another "it sold millions, but we projected bigger millions"?

These losses are only of cancelled games that they projected weren't worth to continue the development.

While personally not a fan of their titles as they fall into the stereotypical "Japanese game" aesthetic (which I just don't like, sorry not sorry), I feel for all the fans that do enjoy their games. Kind of shitty.

All this says to me (admittedly someone with no business experience) is that they need to make more games, with smaller budgets, and reasonable expectations. Not everything has to be "AAA" or a "banger". Good enough is good enough. Hell, sometimes good can be better than great (don't ask me how).

I mean..........what did they think would happen when they sign exclusivity deals with one console..............that has just hit its stride (as far as sales, not games)........with games that are niche...................at $70.

They released FF16 (big budget and exclusive), FF7 remakes (Big budget and exclusive), Forspoken (big budget and exclusive), Strangers of Paradise (seemingly big budget, failed).

Why complain you willingly capped your revenue and profit?

I have no sympathy for them, they decided to take Sony's money for exclusivity, now they have to live with the consequences of those actions.

It is funny though how Sony and its gamers are slowly killing Square.

Well, the guy is very funny. Too bad he doesn't wear long stockings like the real thing, haha.

I think the new president is making a good strategic decision by being selective about the games to launch and getting rid the bad apples early on, even if they will cause losses.

I hope that the canceled games in this announcement are not FF or DQ related (well, not likely), but games that were outsourced to western studios (such as Outriders or Avengers, which did not meet expectations).

That said, Square Enix is doing great this year and will continue to do so.

FF7Rebirth is one of the most critically acclaimed games of the year and will most likely be named this year's GotY.

The FF16 DLC and the crossover with FF14 have also been very well received, and the upcoming release of the PC version will further expand the audience.

Of great interest is the release of the FF14 expansion pack this summer, which is one of the most played and critically acclaimed MMOs and has also extended its reach to the Xbox. This expansion will bring tremendous benefits to SE.

Also, Visions of Mana, due out this year, looks very good and promising.

Next year is expected to see the release of KH4. The previous game, KH3, was a huge hit, selling 7 million copies, and KH4 is expected to be a huge success as well.

Square Enix has much better material than this cancellation, and I'm very optimistic about their future outcome .

@st_monica: And yet the last 3 exclusives they've made for Sony have underperformed sales wise for them (FF16, Forsaken, FF7 Rebirth) so Sony is killing them slowly.

The smartest thing they can do is stop taking the exclusivity money from Sony as it clearly isn't enough and just release every game on every platform.

Well, in case you have misunderstood the statemet by Square Enix, this is an unrealized loss due to the cancellation of games that did not meet their standards. The new CEO's policy of focusing on a small number of quality games was announced a few years ago, and that policy has now been implemented.

I know some people want to turn and twist it and make it look like they had to cancel the games because the exclusivity deal with Sony was not working out well, but that is simply not true.

You may remember that Bethesda disappointed a lot of Xbox fans last year by releasing 4/10 garbage like Redfall. Knowing this, you better understand that Square Enix made a good decision to cancel low quality games so as not to betray their users like that, even at a loss.

The 3 games I mentioned all fell below expectations,, sales wise and therefore they didn't make as much money as they wanted and thus have to cancel projects, it doesn't take a genius to figure it out.

What does a first party MS game have to do with a third party devs exclusives underperforming and thus not making them enough money to continue its projects? oh that's right nothing you're just trying to deflect reality lol.

@last_lap: Aside from Forspoken, which is not even a Sony exclusive, FF16 and FF7Rebirth are most likely profitable enough for the company, even if they have not reached their highest targets yet. It will be shown in the upcoming financial results, so let's wait and see.

Again, contrary to your assumption, if Square needed the money, they wouldn't have canceled the games that didn't meet their standards, instead they would have tried to make money by selling them to consumers even though they knew it was garbage, just like Bethesda did with Redfall. What they are doing right now is the exact opposite.

@st_monica: Square screamed from the rooftops that FF7 Remake sold 3.3 million copies in 3 days, and not a peep from Square since the release of FF7 Rebirth, so safe to say it was a flop in sales.

FF16 sales were down compared to the previous game. Exclusivity Iis killing Square.

No.

FFVII Rebirth is selling below expectations, the FFXVI expansion is middling, and really PC versions of these games won't amount to much sales.

Visions of Mana could be audience limited as well.

SquareEnix is shown to be unbale right now to grow their audiences of their IPs and it shows.

@texasgoldrush:

Except FF7Rebirth is the 4th best-selling game in the U.S. so far in 2024, despite being a single-platform exclusive.

Visions of Mana could be the best selling Mana game of all time due to the quality.

Yet Square Enix stock price has risen 6% after the "sad news" as investors saw growth potential.

Sony's money must taste really good for Square Enix

So good in fact that they completely stopped making games xD

they make more money on none ff ip in manga/anime dept.

issue is now sony vertical stack said market right near the monopoly line.

I care not for other people's fetishes.
