I think switch ability to sell the same game that is on PS4 is really underrated. While performance of those games tend to be shit it is a window for casuals to try out games normally only us gamer play.

I personally is neutral on 3DS it does its job but library was lacking. Played some 8/10 games like SMT IV, Persona Q, Etrian Odyssey, Zelda a Link between Worlds and few fire emblem but nothing that was a must buy. Really good JRPG machine though. On top of 3ds jrpg, you can play DS jrpg as well. Really irked by nintendo not selling DS games on their eshop tho.

Yeah the people that prefer the 3DS over the Switch really downplay this. By the time the 3DS came out mobile gaming was eating away at the handheld console market hence why the 3DS only sold half as many units as the DS. Game development was starting to get more expensive so making 3rd party games for just one platform especially a Nintendo platform was becoming less viable.

Outside of some Nintendo first party games the second screen at best just used as mini map or inventory screens\ which makes it look like an overrated gimmick with how some people in this post are hyping up the dual screens. Just about everything that could be done on a 3DS/DS could be done on a phone or tablet. Heck the Switch could play DS and 3DS games how they were designed if Nintendo wanted it to. I see people emulate 3DS/DS games on the Lenovo Legion Go and they simply rotate the display into portrait mode and detach the controllers. The screen is big enough to fit both dual screen images on display.

The saving grace of the Switch is that it can play home console style games which mobile phones can't do other than emulate old ones and the only other console the PS Vita did it pretty poorly.

The general public don't give a damn that they can't fit a Switch in their pockets since it is still small and light enough to slide into a small backpack or purse. The bonus of it being bigger allows it to be more powerful than it would be if it stayed pocket sized and the larger screen gives enough real estate for people to do local multiplayer sharing the device.

@nirgal: I agree that Asians are definitely more under-represented than blacks in Western media. So Asians in the West would have every right to be offended at a black lead in a Japanese setting, since Asians are already more under-represented than blacks in Western media...

However, there is a counter-balance to this: Asia has its own thriving media industries. Nowadays, Asian pop culture is huge across the world. Anime, dramas, games, movies and music from Asia are popular worldwide, especially among Millennials and Gen Z. So it's not like Asians necessarily need Western representation, when they have their own popular media industries to represent themselves.

You can't say the same for, say, Africa or the Caribbean. Nigeria has Nollywood, but that's often perceived by outsiders as a cheap Nigerian knock-off of Hollywood and Bollywood. They don't really have anything to compete with Western pop culture. So the only practical way to have popular black representation is by working in Western media industries. There are no non-Western alternatives they can turn to.

Asia has 1st and 2nd world nations and economies that rival the West. While Asian diaspora do have legitimate complaints about their representation in Western media they act as if their ancestral lands don't have a ton of good media with good production values that rivals and surpass the West. They put too much stock in only Western made media being valid likely because of them growing up as minorities in Western nations. Asian media has been kicking Hollywood's ass for a while now.

People consume anime and manga/manhua/manhwa more than cartoons and comics. Streaming services are buying up the global rights to as much Asian media as possible because a lot of viewers are willing to give any unknown or obscure movie or show a chance just because it is Asian and they saw how good Asian media such as Train To Busan and Squid Games was.

Also most of big budget Western media is heavily dependent on the Chinese audience in order to be a success. I believe it is part of the reason Asians as a result started getting better representation and growing representation in Hollywood. Because they realized they couldn't emasculate Asian men and fetishize Asian women as much without pissing off the biggest Asian nation they're dependent on for success.

Meanwhile most of Africa and the Caribbean are still very poor and and underdeveloped so their isn't much opportunity for a local television and movie industry with big or even small production values. So representation for Black people is heavily dependent on nations where they are a minority unlike for Asians.

Asians undeniably have better representation than Black people when it comes to video games since after all there are a ton of Asian game studios. Asian culture is also liked a lot by Western audiences so a lot of Western games will also use Asian characters and aesthetics for them.

This is a big reason why that Asians don't count as a POC or are seen as White adjacent to a lot of other POC or activist groups.

@hardwenzen: I had to downsize the resolution of some screenshots to meet file size limit. Also on an 8.8" screen these resolutions are perfectly fine. Anything above 1080p is overkill. I tried using 1600p a couple of times in games just to see how it would look and the difference between it and 1200p was very hard to see and not worth the performance drops. You are also forgetting all the upscaling tech that is available on PC. For example with Days Gone I used Radeon Super Resolution to scale the game from 800p to 1600p and it looks way better than native 800p would without any noticeable performance costs. My Legion Go is definitely playing some of these games at settings better than the PS4.

Digital Foundry has a video on handhelds like mine running current gen AAA games like Horizon Forbidden West and A Plague Tale Requiem.

Love my Ally...but I am not getting excited for it. Lot of what I seen on the internet it will be just a refresh of the current model. Hopefully I'm wrong.

The upcoming mobile AMD strix point could at the very least give new Ally a big improvement in battery life similar to the Steam Deck OLED and its LCD counterpart.

Still gonna run games at medium low setting in low resolution and only get 60fps on non demanding titles. Mobile gaming has potential, but just like with VR, we are far from it being viable.

screenshots taken from my Legion go which has the same chipset as the ROG Ally. All the games here are at least high settings.

Huxley, it seemed like it was aiming to do what Destiny series did. World Of Darkness looked like it could have been a neat MMO. Project Legion could have been a decent Planetside competitor. Peria Chronicles was done dirty by Nexon. That game could have had PalWord's success. Dragon Hound looked the most interesting out of the monster hunter inspired genre. Ein Epicus Incognitus looked like a nice game that never was. I hate NCsoft staff member that was in charge of Project Hon that embezzling his greed got the game cancelled.

Understandable. PC is where it's at, the PS5 cant even convince PS4 owners that it's worth purchasing.

I am a ps4 owner.... They've not made a compelling ps5 in my opinion.

I think it’s time to entertain the idea that this newer generation of gamers might lean heavily PC. I spoke about this back during Christmas time. I have a 9 year old who exclusively plays on PC as do all his friends. My 8 year old nephew too. I think the popularity of Twitch and YouTube gaming have something to do with this as well. We might be in the early stages of a shift where consoles are for boomers. (Millennials actually but you know what I mean) The financial/business analysts are starting to take notice as well. Then go look at your local Best Buy stores. The console gaming sections have shrunk while the gaming PC and accessory aisles have exploded.

A lot of games that kids like such as FNAF, Roblox and Minecraft had their start on PC and were very popular before making it over to consoles. While not necessarily a game something kids love nowadays is Skibidi Toilet which is heavily based on Garry's Mod and SFM animation community animations and humor. I would see kids playing Fortnite and Minecraft on public library PCs. Most games and genres that are groundbreaking and started trends originated on PC for the past decade. We are also seeing PC gaming move into the handheld space. Every Best Buy I have been to has the ROG Ally on display.

The reason why pc gaming is growing so quickly is the social media, especially the streamers. Literally all of them are using high end pc's, and they are always trolling and meme'ing consoles. You have a 10y old that joins a stream on twitch, and sees this on daily basis, you can bet your ass his undeveloped brain would want what is being suggested to him on his screen. You remove all the streamers/content creators, and pc would be more irrelevant than it was in early 2000's.

And how relevant would consoles and their games be if you took away the multi million dollar mass marketing campaigns with the billboards, public transit ads, tv commercials/super bowl ads, food promotions, "free" copies to reviewers and whatever else they paid out of pocket to have it get promoted?

@osan0: Eh different strokes for different folks. Mobile gaming is huge but a lot of people want to play traditional home console and PC games on portable devices which are the types of games phones and tablets natively lack and especially lack the processing power for.

Also you are paying for portability with these devices. I can't slide a gaming desktop into my backpack and pull it out to play some Doom Eternal on the plane or train or in a waiting room. If power was all that mattered in PC gaming there wouldn't be so many laptop gamers on our platform and they wouldn't be selling so much.

The ROG Ally for example compared to gaming laptops of the same price is pretty good value when it comes to performance with it only being outpaced in games that only support DLSS and not FSR on it compared to competition using RTX and the screen on it is better in colors compared to laptops of the same price. Not to mention the ROG Ally Z1 Extreme goes on sale frequently for as low as $600. The Z1 Model is actually a good alternative to the Steam Deck with its often on sale price being $400 now. The Lenovo Legion Go has recently gone as low as $629 brand new for it.

@judaspete: The battery life of the Steam Deck OLED is unbelievable for the types of graphics and performance you can get out of it. The Switch already can't fit in pockets so I would gladly have a handheld that is a little thicker if it means much better performance. The difference between the Switch and the Steam Deck in graphics and performance is night and day in 3D titles that push the hardware. Some games on the Switch are unplayable or borderline unplayable even in docked mode despite looking like hot garbage on them already.

I also figure a shorter battery life would give Nintendo the excuse to sell their own power banks and 3rd parties licensed by them. Obviously I don't want the new Switch to last 1 and half hours at best but who is seriously going to be playing a game for 6-8 hours straight with no access to electricity outside of some small minority of people that travel by plane regularly and get stuck with the seat with broken power outlets every time? Nowadays most people have portable power banks even if they have phones with long last battery life because people can make the mistake of forgetting to charge their phone or the outlet in their bedroom being to far away from their bed and they still want to use their phone.
